Laptop Spontaneoulsy Reboots

Did anybody suggest a new install of Windows 2000? - Don't load any other Software or hardware drivers - See what happens - No printer or other devices - Just bare machine - Then add a piece at a time - What processor do you have - If expense to repair is $400-500 + maybe look at a Refurbished unit. I have a Dell desktop that reboots and reboots on start-up about 3-5 times till I get to the start menu. I'm going to wipe it out and Format / Re-install Windows.

Cwave,

That is standard practice for me. I format the hard drive about once a year, maybe two years if things are working ok. Especially with kids always loading their games and other internet junk.

I have not had much luck with re-installing over the existing operating system.

Mike may have software issues... but this is not one of them... /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I had the same problem with my Dell laptop. Dell tech support went into overdrive to figure it out and ended up sending me a new motherboard (not that), another new motherboard with new RAM and processor chip (still not it), a new 'frame' to my display (thought we had it, but no) without finding the problem.

Finally, when the tech was here and it acted up again he tore the entire thing down and found a small, small screw that had come loose from the original motherboard and had managed to get wedged umder the power supply. When the machine was torqued or tilted or hit just right it would short out the power supply. He removed the screw and reassembled everything and I've not had problem one since.

One thing I wanted to mention was to check to see if you can duplicate the problem by hitting it or shanking or torquing it a particular way. I thought it was the little magnetic deal in the display frame gone bad (shows what I know, huh?).

Good luck figuring it out. I hope IBM tech support is even half as good as Dell's. If they are, you'll be all set. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

John beat me to it. My guess is that the unit is overheating. Make sure that the laptop has good airflow. Prop it up on the corners only so the bottom doesn't get as hot and see if it still reboots as frequently.

Re: Laptop Spontaneously Reboots

Thanks for all the ideas, guys. I ran PC diagnostics on it all Sunday afternoon. Nothing failed. The laptop was sitting on a hard, flat surface for the entire time. This diagnostic software can even spin the fan and check temperature probes built into the laptop.

I unplugged the laptop, put it on my lap and less than 5 minutes later, locked up. Rebooted, same test, the screen got a hashed marked band that ran across the top of the display. Locked up. So, I am thinking it's either a problem with the case flexing and shorting something out or it's a thermal issue even though the fan runs fine. Perhaps accumulated dust on something.

How about a defective (expensive) battery pack... at the end of it's life... /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

It just locked up with no batteries installed and just running off AC power. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Re: Laptop Spontaneously Reboots

Mike,

I use to have this small video that I could send you on computers. Basically it is about this guy in his office and he can't get his puter to work, so he starts beatin the side of the monitor, then he starts hitting harder and harder, then he throws something at it, and then he eventually throws the thing out the window of a twenty story building. I don't think it would help the situation here but might make you feel better.

ps, i just wished i could fine the video

Most laptops depend on the battery for the proper load (for regulation purposes)... it's no different than trying to run your vehicle WITHOUT the battery... the alternator starts "searching" and you have poor regulation or a knocked out alternator/regulator .../forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Bottom line- you need a proper load... /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
