How would you like to own and operate a diesel with the thirst this baby must have?

The Emma Maersk (largest by volume self propelled object in the world) now has the largest diesel engine. She packs a 118,000 horse diesel engine.

Click on the URL below to see the most powerful diesel engine in the world that powers the ship.

I don't think you'll be seeing one of these in a 1/2 ton pickup anytime soon.

Probably take at least a 3/4 ton p/u to handle that motor!!!
Amazing the size of those pistons, etc. I can't imagine the fuel requirements, or is it just hooked straight to an oil well?

David, Being a transoceanic cargo ship, the fuel line from the oil well would be a significant engineering feat in itself!

I had a forward from someone else in my email saying that ship will cross the Pacific in about 4 days, carrying all kinds of wonderful lead based products from China to poison our kids.

I know what you mean about long fuel hoses!!

I'm sure it wouldn't fit in a 3/4 ton truck. A smaller compact truck, however, might fit inside one of those pistons.

The efficiency they've achieved with this is incredible.

I thought the oil galleries in the piston head were pretty neat! It amazing what you have to think about at that scale. Imagine the machine tools needed to make it. Very interesting!!

I just might like to own and operate the equipment that requires a power source such as this. :D

It should make a couple of bucks each trip which would be very beneficial form my financial situation. :)

IE: Beats picking bottles!:D :D :D

the engine isnt what impresses me.

its the idea that there are machines at least TWICE its size that cast it, machine it, and move it.

THATS what i find amazeing!

I saw one of those History Channel specials about big things and this engine was featured. The crank case has DOORS! When the engine is off, of course, you can walk right in and inspect stuff. Apparently most new trans oceanic ships are using these big diesels now.

Geee, that thing is going to drink fuel at some alarming rate  Just read that it drinks 1660 gallons / hour

It would consume roughly the contents of this tank per hour :

It is amazing to think of how these engines are made and fitted in to the ship. The machines to make it must be massive.

Very impressive!!!
Thanks for posting this!

Actually the engine in the link is one of their older engines. The current engine is a RT-Flex 96C and puts out 80,080 kW at 102 RPM.

The RT-Flex 96C is used in the Ebba Maersk which is a 11,000 TEU Maersk PS-class container vessel (it holds 11,000 containers). The ship weighs in at 156,907 tons. Recently Odense Steel Shipyard in Denmark launched the latest version of this ship.

There's actually a very good article on the ship and the engine in a magazine I get, Diesel & Gas Turbine Worldwide.

D&G Turbine Worldwide article.

What the heck does the starter look like?? It must be as big as a house. What kind of power plant energizes the starter? Must have high tension towers on the docks.

Most likely either 3 phase motors or a seperate diesel engine is used for starting it. Some tractors have a small engine used to start the larger drive engine.

Someone has told me they are designed so any one cylinder can be taken off line and repaired while the remainder continue to work.

Don't know on ones that big, but don't a lot of the ship engines use compressed air to get them turning over and started?

Very interesting Teacha, but I am at a loss to know what sort of lead based cargo to which is referred, perhaps yo coiuld give some examples to enlighten me.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

When I was fresh from 9+ months of school and arrived at my permanent duty station in SAC (USAF) the building I worked in had an aux genset for standby power. Of course the engine didn't move anything but electrons but the cylinders were large enough that the maint troops rode up and down on top of the pistons to inspect. Tube type computers took lots of power.
