Timber,

...6 feet wide. It is 3 ft in dia. ...

6' x 3' dia = 42.411 cubic foot = 317.260 gallon [US, liquid] (assuming inside dimensions and no internal shaft)

Ron, what is the $$$ for a used 500 gal tank? Where did you find one? Propane company reject or ? Also, how wide is one without cutting off the ends?

Ok to answer the propane tank questions. The LP company I used to work at gave away to the turf farms in our area all the junk propane tanks we had. All we would do was remove all the pressure, strip off the valves, chisel the threads so they could not be refitted and placed back in service. There was a tank company back in the 60's that made a tank with all of the fittings in one end. The turf guys would clamor for these tanks seeing how the barrel was totally smooth. They would fabricate a frame that attached to both ends and they would fill them with water and tow them over the fields right after seeding. Check with the local gas companies like Amerigas or Suburban. They may have these older "end loaders".

I paid $50 for mine. Length would be about +- 12ft.

TOM;
Your calculations are correct plus,
317 gal x 8.34#/gal = 2652 lbs of water + weight of tank= a lot

TIMBER;
that roller will weigh more than your B7800. BE CAREFUL , I'd use it only on level ground. Don't try going down hill and braking or turning or you'll be the filling in that sandwich. BTDT and lived to tell you ,becareful.!!

Not being critical just offering caution from experience ,actually very good ideas for HD rollers, we had one on the farm made from 3 chlorine one ton cylinders, with 3/4in steel.

Quick question. I have no hills, just flat as a pancake. I have a Legacy XL 4x4, 27 hp. What do you guys think, weight wise, is the max for a lawn roller for me?

Yea I have been driving Semis for years, I know all about hauling trailers that out weigh the toe vehicle. A semi trailer loaded is 4 to 5 times the wt of the tractor. Think of that the next time you dive for an exit across the path of 1. I am not very concerned with the wt of the roller verses the tractor

If you're all flat ground you should be ok. As fas the tractor trailer goes , I used to drive semis too. It's whole lot different when you've got brakes on the thing being towed when trying to stop from speed or going down hill.

We used to routinely move selfunloading wagons around the silo yard with an 1949 A-C, "B". Even though it was level and the wagons weighed 12tons and Allis weighed about 2000#, you could start up just fine, BUT you didn't want to go more than 1st gear (about 2mph) because that 12 tons didn't want to stop as fast as the tractor, had a tendecy to jack knife.

I think I am going to use sand in the roller anyway. I like the Idea of the thing self cleaning the inside. It is also a material I have on hand. My land is all flat anyway. In the early spring the soil hear is moist and soft so I want to level and compact it for the horses. I also have plans for a dirt road through the woods that will also need compacting. So far most of the materials are on hand to build this. Like I need more projects LOL
