Large PTO chipper

I know purchasing isn't in the budget, but there are quite a few units out there such as this:

which are designed to shred the tree without any moving or hauling to a chipper, if they maybe found in your area.

There are also loader mounted units which maybe used for already fallen trees.

You need the advice of a registered forester. You should check with your local forestry department for free advice and a list of registered consultants. Here in GA. there is government cost sharing in the form of grants. Your local forestry department can advise you with all assistant programs. If the stand is not presently infested with beetles your best bet might be to let the stand grow for a few more years to make it profitable for a logging operation to come in and do the thinning for you. With enough research you can find someone that will do you a good clean job. The forestry department has guidelines and sample contracts. The advice they can give is essential and what the heck you pay their salary anyway why not use them.:thumbsup:

We've been using a Echo Bearcat 9540H for the uses you describe. It is 9" capacity and hydraulic feed, with an auto feed feature to regulate speed. We got it to chip white pines while thinning some of them, trimming around fields, and any that are taken out for fences to go through the property. The main use is the by product of the chipping, which is making wood chips to use for animal bedding.


It will take a whole white pine that is 6" diameter. Any bigger than that it will get caught where the branches swell the trunk out. In that case they have to be trimmed down. We use it on a 2550 JD which is 65pto HP and it will really make the chips fly. Here's a link to my thread discussing the same issue and some info on the unit we got:
