Thanks for the encouragement Soundguy,
Looks like I will gain a little bit of something?? Hahaha...but nevertherless, a worthwhile project. I did not consider the added cooling and extra oil volume at first, but maybe some cooling fins to dissapate the heat would be a good idea to incorporate too.
Thanks,

I've even seen oil pans with cooling fins... Now that is a neat idea...

If it will help with better filtration (to some degree) I'd like to do it.

I have to make an adapter that will fit the 3/4 threads on this larger filter. The adapter will have to thread to the oil filter mount which now has a hole through it so I have to machine the mount and add threads to it and plug the hole on top The old mount has a "nut" that screws onto a post in the old filter cannister which has a paper filter around the post (not "spin-on"). Then I have to make the OD of the mount match the seal on the new filter. I will do that with another adapter I have to make from scratch.
I wish I could "see" what other filters look like maybe if one would work?...I bought this new one and was just going to modify if it wouldn't hurt.

Rob, there are so many (100s to 1000s) of filters out there that use the the same threads. I know the 3/4 is very common, but have you really searched the filter manufactures' web sites to see if you can't find a larger filter that has the same threads as your tractor, with a similar diameter seal. Also, what about just changing the nipple or having one machined so the whatever the tractor block threads remain unchanged but the exposed threads of the nipple where the filter screws on are now 3/4, then your only worry is getting a filter with the right seal diameter?

Duane,
To be honest I have not searched much. I just assumed I could not find a compatible spin-on filter to fit the existing housing. I'll try to show you. Here is a picture of the old oil filter and housing and the new spin-on filter I want to use..

You can see that the old filter has a post welded into it and the filter element goes over it (top left). See to the right of the old housing...there's a "nut" that screws onto that post to keep it all together. So when the nut is off, there is a big hole in to old housing. The thread on the post seems to be Metric but close to Ø3/8" fine thread but not SAE. Additionally, the "O" ring seals do not match up...with any spin on filter, regardless of size or thread.

At least from those I've seen....maybe you can steer me in the right direction? I would love to use a bigger filter.
Thanks,

You might try the 60s & 70s Chev. big trucks, they had a 2qt filter canister that looked a lot like your pix.

Lots of heavy equipment manufacturers have large capacity filter cans.. I know I've changed some doozies on big cat's and other brands..

Oh yes, I SEE it now. I'm sorry, but short of replacing the mount, I have no other suggestions that would allow the use of a spin on. There are other "bypass" filter systems that use an external filter mount, I wonder if something like one of those could substitute for the old mount and then you could use a "full-flow" filter instead.

Remember the old VW Beetle. The oil pan had cooling fins.
The whole engine was air cooled too.

I installed a full flow oil fiter on my VW and an externally mounted oil cooler. That oil coller had a "shroud" and was very good at cooling the oil. Thing still ran hot on a warm day.

Thank you for all the suggestions. I am very busy (with real work for a change) so it will be a while before I attempt to make the modification. But I've decided to use the larger filter. When I do I'll revive the thread and post some photos.
Thanks guys,
