Man killed when lawn tractor overturns

Associated Press
June 25, 2003

STILESVILLE, Ind. -- A lawn tractor overturned on top of a man who was spraying weeds Tuesday, crushing him to death.

Brian Johnson, 46, was driving the tractor when it rolled backward on a steep hill near Stilesville, about 25 miles southwest of Indianapolis. Johnson was pinned by the tractor, which weighed 1,100 to 1,200 pounds, police said.

Johnson remained pinned for an undetermined amount of time before he was found by his brother and father, who called for an ambulance. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police have ruled the death an accident. An autopsy was also planned.

What is the point of the autopsy?

"What is the point of the autopsy? "

Probably required by state law in cases of accidental deaths.

Any idea of what brand lawn tractor it was? The article stated 1100 to 1200 lbs....that's a pretty heavy lawn tractor.

I was thinking the same thing. My 42" Craftsman weighs about 600lbs. I don't have any more info than what the article says, so I don't know the brand.

I have a 1984 vintage 17LGT ford lawn mower it weights close to 1000# with sterling hydro static and class 0 3pt could handle up to a 62-64" deck with the deck i'd be close to 1200#

To me, the important thing about this tragedy--which is relevant to several recent threads regarding slopes and how to mow them, etc.--is that the tractor overturned BACKWARD down the hill. Seems to confirm the wisdom of always keeping the front pointed downhill, and the weight uphill.
