Lawyers, doctors, or guns

Todd,

Part of why people get angry about this issue is that it is clear that a group of folks are trying to slowly elimate guns from this country.
Step 1: Get all the guns registerd so we know who has them. This makes it easier to lean on them in the future. Of course we will say that its just a safety issue at this point.
Step 2: Widdle away at the problem by outlawing certain types. We have already seen this happen to some degree.
Step 3: In parralel with 1&2; Propaganda. Ever notice that CNN will state the a criminal will use an "automatic weapon" when in fact it is not automatic at all but a garden variety semiauto. The goal in this step is to scare folks and spread disinformation, therefore make gun ownership look like a big scary problem.
Step 4: Eventually outlaw guns by making it so convoluted that you need to jump through hoops to obtain even a hunting rifle.
Step 5: Try to put the firearms business out of business. Have you seen the law suits. Is the manufacture of a tractor responsible for me running it off a cliff and killing myself? The mayors of american cities seem to think so.

HCI, AMA, and similar groups have basically stated this is the plan of action.

So stop being a facist. If you want guns outlawed in your local area you will need to hash that out with your neighbors.
Otherwise leave the rest of us alone.
Did you see that election map? Did you note that the center of the country had a slightly different view than the left and right coast? Thats because we get tired of the coasts trying to dictate what is right and wrong for the rest of the country.

Guys: next time you visit your doctor ask him or her if the agree with the AMAs (American Medical Association, basically a doctors union) stated goals to elimate private ownership of firearms. If they do then its time to change your primary care provider. These guys need to remember that we are the customers and that we can go some place else.

Todd are you an AMA member?

Phred,
The same bunch that are wanting to outlaw guns are the same bunch that are wrapped up in this politcally correct garbage, femisim, pro gay, affirmative action, anti hunting,no smoking in a business or public place, think you should reimburse a slaves great, great, great, great granchild because something happened 400 years ago that you had no control over. If you are successful and become rich you do not need all your, you should give it all away even though you earned it fair and square, you should not have a baseball or football team named after an indian,a school named after Thomas Jefferson is wrong, because he owned a slave, the same bunch that sues a school or an all boys organization because they do not allow girls on a boys football team, people that want the boys scouts to do away with their fishing badge because they advocate fishing, the same bunch think there should be gay boyscout leaders.

Thank goodness for the electoral college, because if not for the electoral colleges those big cities would be dictating how I live in rural America more than they do now.

Phred and Hillbilly,
Now we're saying it like it is. Geez it's amazing that we've survived as a country for 225 years now and didn't need all the stupid laws we have today for guns. Never used to be a problem. Now is it guns that are the problem or the fact that the people that are so dang gungho for the latest and greatest restriction of freedom should be home taking care of their kids and teaching them the respect that so many of us grew up with. I wouldn't even think about hunting on someone's land without permission. But we have laws for that already. More laws and more safety courses aren't going to keep the idiots of our backyards with guns. The only difference is that I won't have any way to fight back. Laws, safety courses, checks, etc. will do nothing more than the laws that we already have.

Bingo!!! That's the problem with gun restriction laws. They ONLY affect those who are willing to follow them (the law abiding citizens) and have absolutely NO meaning to the criminals. There are already dozens of laws to keep firearms out of the hands of criminals and they work as well as the laws designed to curb the use of drugs.

I dont want to get involved in this debate, but let me just add a perspective no one has discussed.

First let me say that Todd has been doing a good job, all alone, expressing a legitimate point of view. The only thing I understand him to be arguing is that, in today's society, he thinks it is reasonable to have licensing and education as a condition of legal gun ownership. He certainly hasnt suggested banning guns, outlawing hunting, or anything that is "fascist", conspiratorial or unconstitutional.

The perspective I want to offer to the pro-gun members is that much of America has different cultural values than you do in the matter of gun ownership. I would estimate that most Americans don't place any value on gun ownership at all. It is irrelevant, so to speak, as a practical matter to them.

Take my situation. With the exception of my maternal grandfather, I am not aware that any member of my family on either side ever owned a gun, fired a gun (except in the armed forces), or went hunting. I never have, and I cant conceive of a likely situation where I would ever want or need to own a gun. As I sit here, I think I can honestly say that I dont know one person of my personal acquaintance who owns a gun. I'm not saying that they might not--just that I am not aware of it if any of them do. I think my family is fairly typical of people who were raised and lived in cities and suburbs.

So, if someone waived a magic wand and made all the guns in America disappear, it wouldnt affect my life at all. Neither would it affect my life if spears, crossbows or roller skates magically disappeared. I'm not saying I favor these things or advocate these things--I don't--I'm just trying to point out to those of you who have grown up in gun cultures how irrelevant the whole issue is too many, if not most, people in our times.

The governmental restrictions that affect me are the ones that I worry about most: taxes that take money out of my pocket, (some) zoning laws and (some) environmental laws that diminish my property rights, and business regulations that make it difficult for me to establish, operate and make a profit out of my business.

I wonder if the pro-gun fervor is about guns themselves, or is it about principles, or is it about a disappearing way of life. I suppose it's some of each.

Glenn,
Gun ownership depends on where you live, how you grew up, what you like to do, etc. I'd like to see the statistics on gun ownership nationwide. I'd say conservatively that 75% of households that are outside major metro areas own guns. They are folks who hunt, target shoot, collect and sell/trade guns, protect livestock, for home defense, shoot competively, and use them for many other things. For me I don't know too many family, friends and so on that don't own guns. Just different circumstances I suppose, but I know a lot of others around the country with similar experience.
When I've bought a gun I've had to fill out the federal forms and once in Oregon had my thumb printed for the state check. In many ways I'm registered with the government regarding guns but it hasn't made me any safer. I just don't see many people volunteering for gun licensing/exams given the current anti-gun sentiment in a lot of places. I say enforce the laws we have now in the same way states have started cracking down on drunk driving. It would be nice to direct the law towards the lawbreakers for a change.

I don't know a grown man personally that doesn't own a gun and most go hunting. I don't know if its because its Texas or because this is a rural area, but obviously things are different here. I don't mind background checks before selling handguns, and I don't mind licensing to CARRY a gun away from home. I don't see where its the government business whether or not I have a gun in my home or on my property.

Deep down it might be a principle thing. It just seems that gun ownership is a target. Whenever a gun is involved in a crime the media want to make guns evil, and try to blame an inanimate object for the crime.

The right of gun ownership is important to me even though I haven't hunted in years.

Glen,
I fully understand what you are saying,a good example is that colored map on election night, these big citys have such a large population, most of them (not all )of thinks the way of life is what they see on CNN/ABC/CBS/NBC and the latest Disney Movie or Oprah and Rosie shows.Hence that is where the electoral college helped rural America in this last presidental electon,if not for the electoral college rural America would be living life more to what your San Francisco/LA/New York City/Chicago etc...... would want and feel what is right for me.
Out here in rural America we see how life really is as far as hunting/conservative values etc..............
You have these drive by shootings/or some wacko cuts loose and mows a bunch of innocent people down/gangs etc and the media jumps on this and feeds it to these people who know no better and they eat it up like candy and thinks just because any one who owns a gun is part of the problem, when in reality it is not,it is a moral problem instead, the loss of repspect/personal accoutability for ones actions and responsibility.I personaly would like to see a conservative tv network that told the other side of the story and had shows that were fit for children to watch in the evening.
I am not a religous fanatic, but I do try to attend Church on regular basis. This nation has turned its back on God and these are the problems you get when that happens,a decaying society.

Yes shocking but so very true.

While we're at it, maybe we should come up with a law against swimming in the ocean. I mean a lot of innocent people are getting chewed up by sharks.
Who do you sue if you get bit by a shark?
