i had a issue close to yours but wouldn't come out of reverse . it turned out through removing the trans cover more times than i can recall . the the reverse gear would shift past the gear on the shaft maybe 1/32 " and the synchronizer would become tilted and bind the gear . I pulled the syncro keys from reverse it shifts fine now i just need to make sure i come to a complete stop before shifting.
