These wrenches were given to me by my grandfather. Plomb flare nut wrenches and Indestro Super manifold wrenches. I was visiting him in my new-to-me 1958 Corvette, which had 2 Carter 4 bbl carburetors and when I arrived they were leaking gas. The fittings were not in the best of shape. He went into his garage and came out with the flare wrenches which did the job. He said keep them, you need them more than me. I can't remember when he gave me the manifold wrenches, probably the same type of situation. I haven't used either in many years, the days of fiddling with old V8 engines seem to be long gone.

+2

Went to look for starter wrenches like that (to buy) recently. Not easy to find, outside of a pro-tool truck, around here.

Nice tools with a back story... something to pass along to the next generation?

At Thanksgiving I gave my son in law a big truck box full of construction and mechanics tools that were duplicates or stuff I don't use now. Overlooked these but they will make a good Christmas present!

Wife came home with 6 Lie Nielsen mortise chisels from a garage sale, never used and she paid $5 for them, she had no idea what they were and haggled the price down from $10.
I was speechless as I know what I paid for one of his planes and lusted for a set of these but found it hard to justify about AU$1K.
I pick up an old locally made Titan chisel when I find them, great steel and really hold an edge well but generally need a bit of work to bring them back up to scratch as they have been abused over the years.

Scored this WellSaw 58B metal cutting bandsaw off Craigslist last Sunday. It's a compact beast (350 lbs) made in Three Rivers, MI. 20171206_163739.jpg

These hand brace bits belonged to one of my uncles. He gave them to me when I was just getting started. At the time some old time carpenters were still using hand braces. Me and my cousins were using drills. The only bits available with a round shank were twist drills and spade bits. Auger bits were only available for hand braces. We used to buy the auger bits, then score the shank somehow, then break it by hammering in a vise, so we could have auger bits with a round shank. Or, sometimes we ground the triangular part roughly round and used that in a drill. The bit on the right is not part of that set, it was given the grinder treatment.

Anyway, I never used these bits, because I didn't want to butcher his nice gift, but I also didn't want to use a hand brace. They are inscribed Irwin on the shank and numbered from 4 to 14. That old system referred to the number of 16's, so a #4 bit was 1/4".
