Another vote for S&W shield. I just paid $399 minus a $75 rebate with a 7 and 8 mag. Only put a couple of magazines through so far, but I like it.

That's a great deal w/rebate! I have the green CT laser version purchased last year new at gun show for $500 and thought I did alright. No rebate then.

How does it fit your hand with the 7 round mag? I bought a Pearce mag extension ($10.), and it now works for me.

Yep definitely helps with L-XL hands... I'm kind of a 'tweener' glove size. Do highly recommend. and put the Talon Grips on the extensions. Here are pics of both mag sizes with the grips added.

9mm is my favorite pistol cartridge, I've got a safe full of pistols chambered in 9mm. There are so many different 9mm pistols available that a man could spend a year looking for and at the different models that may appeal to him. (I've yet to find a store that them all in one place) You can get DA, SA, DAO, hammer fired, striker fired, with safety, without safety, the list just goes on forever.

My favorite is an oldie, a Sig P239, double action. Small enough to carry almost all the time, fits my hand perfectly. A little heavier than some, a bit lighter than others, but it's the one that fits me. No safety, just a long trigger travel to get the first round off. 7 round magazine, 1 in the tube.

And since no one pistol I've found can be carried in all circumstances, for dressed up occasions, I've got a Sig P238 (.380) that is carried in a wallet holster.

I liked the H&K VP9 and Glock 17 Gen 4, but neither are compact. For that, the Glock 43 is really nice.

I am lucky I don't live in a commie state that restricts how many guns I can carry.

Big one on belt, 38 in pocket, or a pocket gun. Depends on weather or situation.

I purchased a M&P shield a couple weeks ago for $359 minus a 12% rural king rebate minus the $75 S&W rebate. Comes out to about $240. Rural King also had Remington 9mm for $8.05 a box after rebates. Bought 1500 rounds. I'm now making a shooting range and here is a target I made tonight out of AR400 plate. I carry at the 4:30 position with an
Alien Gear Cloak Tuck 3.0 IWB Holster (Inside the Waistband). Only time I found it in the way was on my riding mower with a seat that doesn't give. I have shot about 400 rounds from several manufacturers and have yet to have a failure to fire. I'll order night sites with the money I saved.

Holy crap, click on the IWB holster link in the above post for a listing of all the guns they make holsters for. This just goes to show how many different guns are out there to be looked at and tried for fit and finish to meet individual needs. The sweetest shooting full sized 9mm pistol I ever shot was a Beretta M9. I have a S&W MP9, which is OK, but nothing like as comfortable as the Beretta. Looking for a trade.

Really, go to a range and shoot a bunch of different pistols. One that is perfect for someone else might be all wrong for you. Pistols are like shoes, if it doesn't fit it will range from uncomfortable to miserable.
