Sounds like a great argument as we moved from film to digital. Problem is the digital camera sensor has reached 35mm, same size as a film camera. To get better images you need bigger sensors, which means bigger mounts. A good thing is lens with bigger mounts are far superior to smaller lens. So if you are set at staying at 35mm or full frame to keep you glass your being left behind.
True enough, but it then means liquidating a lot of stuff... what a pain! Wonder what the value is of all my lenses?

Eh, if you plan on printing on billboards then sure larger sensors make sense but even today's fullframe stuff has more than enough resolution. The reason mirrorless are moving to new mounts is that the focal plane is different when you don't need a mirror box, hence why the adapters are bulky.

Heck, the A7 still uses a fullframe sensor so they're the exact same size as your 5D/6D/1D/etc.

That said the while the whole "feeds and speeds" thing is fun to argue, better photos come from good composition, framing and being willing to "zoom with your feet". I've seen stunning work from a 450D and seen people with more money than sense put out marginal work.

Agreed. Good glass in the hands of someone who understands composition is the key to stunning photography.

Might be a lot less as technology marches on...

Sensor size is more important than pix counting, for many reasons.

I still have my Canon AE1P with different lenses and filters I bought before my daughter was born 30 years ago. Never comes out of the bag.

Been using a point and shoot Canon SX150 IS for a few years and it takes pretty good photos. Took a pic of a Mississippi Kite in the top of a tree from 100+ feet out and about that many up the other day. Was able to crop out the attached shots of it.

Bought a used Nikon DT3200 DSLR the other day and it was crap so I resold it. The pictures I took with it were nowhere near the quality of my old point and shoot. It also required a big expensive lens to have any kind of zoom capability. My nerves are beyond the capability of using a camera that doesn't have image stabilization.

Just upgraded to a Canon SX230 HS point and shoot that I think will be a real upgrade from my SX150. Just for grins I pulled out the filters I had for my AE1P. They were all 49mm and I used an adapter ring to mount them on the AE1. Low and behold they fit in the lens cover ring of the SX230. Not sure I will ever play with them because I never did with the old camera but they will go in the new pouch I plan to buy for the new camera. I have a No1, 2, and 4 close up filter, a daylight, and polarizing filter. If I ever need to take shot on a bright day with too much glare I will try the polarizing filter for sure.

Here are a few shots from the Canon SX230.

I use a monopod for heavy glass, drops out of the way quickly and very light, facilitates carrying as you can throw the lot over your shoulder.
Use a Nikon D800 and often coupled to a100-300 f4 while SWMBO uses a D300S with a 70-200 f2.8, about the same focal range with the different size sensors.

Just bought Nikon D500 kit (kit lense is a nicely rated 16-80) last week. Haven't had much time to play with it though. Coming from a Nikon D90 the speed on the 500 is amazing. My daughter plays volleyball so hoping to expedite my learning curve as club ball starts in a month or so!

I need to get back to this wonderful hobby... been lazy not wanting to carry an arsenal of lenses and 'shooting' only with my iPhone X. I do want to trade my Canon 70-200is for a longer L prime. I am done with kids sports. It was a great lens but now I want to shoot birds as mine have flown the nest! :D
