Flail Mower Let's talk flail mowers

Can the nation take one more look at the mower I picked up last week and help me ID it? I have contacted Alamo and they said they had never made a round tubed frame. This looks factory but could be some good custom work I guess. Thank you, Lenny <img src="http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=469584"/><img src="http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=469585"/><img src="http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=469586"/><img src="http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=469587"/><img src="http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=469589"/><img src="http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=469590"/><img src="http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=469591"/>

Looks like an Alamo to me and they changed the 3pt somewhere along the way

Without measuring, I'd guesstimate my Caroni rear roller is about 5 inch diameter. It has to support the weight of about half the mower and roll easily over small obstacles so much narrower might not do the job. You want the roller to bump over obstacles, not snag them. Also, there is presumably a bracket on the flail where the old roller lived on your mower. Measure distance from bolt/pin hole for rear rolling bearing setting to ground and at least double it. If the rear roller bracket is adjustable (it should be) then just make sure that the diameter of the new rear roller permits a modicum of adjustment above and below target cut height. A rough approximation of cut height can be had by lifting the mower with 3PT and lowering slowly until you see the knives touching already cut grass (mower not spinning, just with one row of knives at dead bottom). At that point you can then judge how the combination of roller diameter and adjustable mount would work to get you into that range.

Ok, I was guessing around 5" as well. (I e not measured the other one). With that said, that size steel pipe get pricey but I am still looking.

The knives that are mounted with hangers and links on my mower are stamped with a B inside of a square box on the back of the knife. Anyone know who makes these blades?

Pipe is pricey, but have you priced a new roller? It's well over $1,000 for my shd88!!!

I am pretty sure its an old Mott Interstater Flail Mower.

I cannot believe that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is the JD dealer you chatted with a full product dealer??

I would call another JD dealer out of the area-Mississippi as an example
and as last result call JD in Moline, Illinois as they can help you for sure.

Hello Ozarks Landowner,

They are probably old Brillion knives but they can be
purchased from many sources as they are standard size.

They dont have to be Briliion knives they can be JD side
slicer knives so no worries there.

Hello Jimmy,

The issue for him would be the machining and welding as one inch schedule 80
pipe was almost $80.00 a foot the last time I checked as I was going to
use it for my boiler install.

A replacement roller will be simpler as everything has been done and only
needs bearings and the hangers.

Is 5 inch schedule 80 pipe really $80/foot?

I'm wondering if schedule 40 would be adequate. As I think about it my Caroni rear roller has lots of dents in it which means it may not be schedule 80 anyway.

Ya it's a full John Deere only dealer. I sent them pics and the number off of the gear box hoping they could figure it out that way. He did say that number sounds like a JD number but they couldn't find anything. They said one of the older guys there thought he had seen one many years ago though.

I would call the main office of John Deere in Moline, Illinois, they have to have records of this flail shredder type.

Once you have removed the chain flails which were ment for between the row ridge till shredding to remove weeds you will have no issues.

This Flail Crop Shredders rotor is a common JD design.

1. All V Belts made are metric and available
2. All Bearings are metric and available
3. The D rings are common and available
4. The D ring mounting straps are available
5. The side slicer knife on this shredder is a common hardened knife and available
6. Be sure to order the exact duplicate knife
a. measure the total length IN A STRAIGHT LINE
b. measure the width of the knive
c. measure the cutting edge length
d. measure the knife thickness

No worries, Call the Moline office and they should have no trouble getting you a copy of the manual for this shredder.

Your half way there, just be sure to wash it really good with a pressure washer or at a car wash or use a steam jenny, replace the V belts, knife hanger straps, D rings and knives, check the wheel bearings, make sure you have the right length PTO shaft, change the oil and then you can mow.
