Just for information,,, a John Deere 390 mower has a 90 inch wide cut,,, mine does,,, anyways!! I mowed about 10 acres of chest high weeds/grass last week,,, The 584 IH used about 1/2 to 3/4 gallon of fuel per acre.
What about the 290?

View attachment 475105View attachment 475106View attachment 475107After talking to a Land Pride dealer in Alberta and finding out how many Canadian Pesos they want, that option is out. However this same dealer mentioned a local farmer that bought a new John Deere flail some years back and never used it. He took some pics when he delivered a new tractor last year. He didn't know the model, I haven't spoken to the farmer. Anyway he is looking for 5200 Canadian Pesos, that works out to about 3900 US. Opinions?

This mower has seen quite a bit of use. Many of the little paint chips are from rocks being mowed and spun up against the inside of the housing creating little dings. It might still be in very acceptable condition, but it is a long way from new. Value is in the $2500-$3000 USD range in my opinion if the knives are decent and it spins true without vibration. Having said that, I'd take this over a new Caroni if the prices were somewhat close. Heavier gearbox, quieter to operate and so on.

Just to clear up a few things.
The guy is asking 5200 Canadian. The dealer I spoke to said he looked under it when there last year and as far as he could tell it appeared unused. It has been sitting in the farmers yard, uncovered for several years. Occording to the dealer, I haven't spoken to the current owner, the guy bought it to replace another he had at one time.

If those are the actual photos of the farmers JD flail, it has had plenty of use. The little dents from the inside out do not happen unless the mower is being used. The knives and rotor and bearings and all might be in great shape. But "unused" is not an accurate description, especially from a dealer that ought to know.

Not sure about the paint dings. If it's anything like my Mott it takes a lot to ding that housing. However the 3pt pin areas look worn as do the skids and has the diagonal down brace been bent and straightened? Don't think it's unused. Go have a look and deal direct w the farmer, maybe you'll learn something you haven't yet. Jim

Agree, that picture says used all over it. "unused" would be fitting for Craigslist ad though... you can stretch things on there.. LOL

Thanks for all the feed back. I'm going to get out there next week to have a look at it in person.

JD's are not as a heavy of housing as a Mott and will dent much easier. If was in fact never used (very doubtful) it should have been kept in a shed not outside in the elements. $5200 Canadian is way too much. If it was kept inside and still looked new would raise the price but it wasn't kept inside and does not look new. It's definitely not a 390 looking at the trash deflector. If you can buy new with a warranty for less money would be a better option. Looking closer it does appear to have dents and a fair amount of rust. The cutter shaft and underside could be very rusty too.
