boggen: That approach would work for most but I don't think it would work very well for serious woodworking involving large power tools that are connected to a dust collection system, layout and assembly tables, etc. That stuff is big and heavy. It is likely set-up as level as possible. If that is the case, then moving it around a couple times a year is a non-starter.

For my own casual wood butchery I have my small Jet table saw on a rolling platform and I can carry my Sears miter saw on its floor stand where I need to. Everything else fits in a tool chest. But when someone describes themselves as an avid woodworker, I assume they have a bit more--and finer stuff.

I've been working out of a garage in the past so this will be phase two. Having said that, you're on target. Machines have dust collection drops and the electrical outlets have been custom installed (by me) to make sure there is never a cord to trip over, etc. I have a lot of things on wheels right now but that will probably change. The wheels are mostly so I can most things 6" or so when it's crowded by the drill press or something. My dream shop will have more space.

I'm leaning toward one large building mostly because it does sound nice to have all the tools in at least mostly the same location. I'd like to plumb the compressed air drops to both the automotive (read tractor) section as well as the woodworking section. I'd like to have a sink. Woodworking has a bit of machine maintenance in it and the tools are pretty much the same stuff you would use in automotive work. Keeping it together makes a lot of sense.

Now I just have to work out the budget.

Well you didn't say there was one of those, that takes all of the fun out it.

I agree with the one building idea... most of my reasons have been mentioned already, mainly the tool sharing thing. I wouldn't mind having a separate building if it was just for storage though.

Either way, be sure to get the necessities. :)

We built a 50 x 50 enclosed shop with a 14 foot drop shed which should have been big enough, except we put 1 door in front and back which are centered. Back door is 20 foot wide by 12 foot high the front door is 12 foot wide and 12 foot high. I would have had twice the room if we had put 2 doors front and back. This worked pretty good till we put our 30 foot travel trailer in the shop because it had to be put in the center with our tractors down the side. We also have a 12 x 25 office in the back of the shop. So we are building another building this spring 24 x 50 with a 12 foot drop shed for the Travel Trailer and stuff.

I am looking to add a garage on the property. I have an attached garage but thats for my sports car and tractor. The Wife would apprecaite being able to park her vehicle in the attached garage (I make the old girl walk in from the carport :) )....Anyway, Im looking to do a high ceiling so I could park an RV in there if desired with an additional two standard bays. Whats unique is that I was hoping to tack a stable on the back for a horse my youngest wants. Anyone done this? I am interested in hearing the good, the bad, and the ugly.

The stable may not be a good idea... unless you like rodents!
