The handle just seems too long, it maybe orig. but that's why I said see if you can find someone with the same unit for comparing.
It could also be bent, too far over. Your parts diagram looks to to be bent less than yours.

Thanks for all the feedback. I'll pull the handle out and see if I can straighten it, if not a new part is thankfully pretty cheap. Its funny the photo makes it look more bent than it really is and it was only whilst looking at the photo, not the tractor, that I realised I'd probably missed the obvious.

Will update thread with final result!

Straightened up and back together, working well. Wasn't sure if Id get it straight again but it came good after removing the handle to get a good purchase and making sure I didnt damage the internal gears, used some scrap rhs section as a lever.

The only thing that may be of use to anyone else is the removal of the rivet that secures the handle to the bevel gear. Its a large steel rivet and the manual says to drill it out which may be ok if you have an industrial drill press but I quickly realised it would be a long process so instead ground off both proud ends and tapped it through in a couple of minutes. The mf parts guy I spoke to was surprised a rivet was oem reckoned they normally spring or roll pins.

thanks again for the suggestions
