Real nice job. Do you need brakes on the trailer wheels? I have a home made trailer I recently bought but needs some work. I'll be real happy if it even comes close to yours.

Casey I built a trailer from scratch a couple years ago and it was a piece of cake to get it titled and licensed. I got mine registered in Lockport NY DMV. The first thing I had to do was get it weighed on a certified scales ( local apple processor ) and then take that weight with a description to the DMV office to make out a registration form. You will need to know what color and what gross weight you want. They will then assign you a number that you have to either stamp or mark in some permanent fashion on the tongue. They will also give you a temporary inspection. Then just go get it inspected. Oh yeah, they will also give you the plates on the spot. Inspection is nothing more than to see if all your lights are working. The DMV site does give you an idea about what lights are required. Use LED'S. Don't forget to put the three red lights in the center of the rear.

I think you guys have it rough! Here, you just go weigh it, and if it is below 2K, they give you a tag. If it is over 2K, then it has to be assigned a VIN # and then you get a tag. A couple of trips around town, and your done.

Nope, you still have it hard. Here is WI, for trailers under 3500#, you just build it and use it. No tag, no title.

(bet that's sort of scary for folks that enjoy big government)

just did one this past summer you have to apply for an inspection at the auto theft offices, you need all your reciepts and a cert weigh slip,it cost me 25.00 to have a guy look at it say looks good and give me a vin sticker,i built mine from scratch so you will need something for the original frame to prove where you got it,if im not wrong i think the price just went up on the inspection, had to change that 1 too many zeroes

Here's and old thread I started in 2006 of a homemade trailer from a camper frame , last year I rebuilt and changed this trailer to a deckover so I had more deck space. Added more supports and flipped the axles for height worked better then expected. And no I never did get it licensed here in NYS my dad licensed it in his home state of NC much easier and cheaper. I don't see whats so hard about getting a home built licensed in NYS.
I mean all you have to do is take it to the state police inspection station, when they decide to be open and not backed up by 3-4 hours,
then of course you have good receipts for all the parts and pieces because you just went and bought all new parts and pieces and
nothing was something you had picked up years ago. Then if they approve all the bits and pieces they have to approve of your welding
and wiring both materials and use, then maybe if they didn't reject you for some piddly reason they will stamp a VIN number on it and take your
money, it's only going to take a day or two each time you have to go see them.. :fiery:

Heck, here in Quebec home made is easy to tag.
Under 1000 lbs you simply pay the fee (about $30 or so) and good to go.

This is basically my recollection of registering a home made trailer in NY many years ago. I have no idea what the other person was talking about in dealing with NYSP. Never heard of such a thing unless it's a relatively recent requirement.
