The book has this picture, which appears to be the same wreck. It lists the date of 9/7/1916

Says brakes failed and they lost control of the engine. Jumped the rails on a sharp curve. The fireman was badly burned and died, another burned and died a week later. Passengers were ok.

Post 14 has a picture showing where the RR went by the farm.

Interesting train photo. Perhaps the Tricycle Guy from Laugh-In was moonlighting as the Engineer.

When I was in grade school, maybe 3rd or 4th grade, all the grade school kids, probably 120, got on the train at our small town and rode it 10 miles to the next town. Road in box cars with both side doors fully open. Took turns sitting in the doorways with our legs hanging out.

What I remember most is how badly the cars rocked back and forth. Looking forward or rearward it appeared the tops of the cars were moving a couple feet. It was a struggle to stand up without taking a step to catch yourself.

So, if the rocking action got in unison..... Maybe this is what happens???

Interesting that the train tipped to the inside of the curve. Any story related to photo? Jon

I thought so too. We're looking at the engine, so one might assume that the derailment happened a bit further down, perhaps before the curve? It's also odd that there is no track displacement or damage to the ties; derailments often tear up the track and the ties. It is indeed an odd situation; would like to see around the curve.

The lack of track damage says to me the entire train flopped on it's side at the same time. With very little forward movement during the flop. As in, simply fell off the tracks sideways.

Looking again at the pic, there's very little evidence of forward movement. Barely piled up dirt in front of the engine.

Maybe it was a long train. Rear portion of train derailed back around the corner. This action started stopping the train. Because of the curve that action simply pulled the cars and engine that we see off the inside of the curve??

I agree; but the laws of physics would suggest that it should have been on the outside of the curve instead of the inside. Weird!

Well, I'm a pretty simple mind. My physics suggest it yanked these cars to the inside of the curve because the rear portion of the train dug in and stopped the train abruptly?

Sure gives us something to think about all day doesn't it Dennis!!!! :D
