My mom is responsible for most of these old pictures. I remember my maternal grandmother talking about the great depression. My maternal grandfather died when I was 3, so I never knew him. He was in army in WW1.
Have many pics unlabeled, will never know who they are. But by observing background items I can sometimes figure out where taken, which helps piece together, with other info, who some of them must have been.

We have a private family Facebook page, so I share these with the family. Most of my nieces and nephews never met my grandparents.

When I look at old pictures I always look in the background. It's an indication of how these people lived. An indication of their financial position, etc.

We are so spoiled.

Grand father passed away 35 years ago today.

Oh wow. I have been following your family thread and love it. I would think this day would be a bittersweet memory for your Grandma and all others in your family. My hat is off to you for your family historical documentation here and the bittersweet memories this day brings to Y'all.

Dennis, my respect for your family heritage value continues to grow. You take this responsibility very seriously. As it should be taken. When you are gone, a lot of this information will be gone. Unless someone in the next generation is willing to take on the challenge.

My Mom saw that "loyalty" in me. So she fed me every bit of information that she thought of. She gave me all the historical documents and pictures when she moved into a Rest Home a couple years before she died. I went thru all of it. I took pictures of all the photos and docs with a good digital camera. Then copied it all onto CDs and gave them to any family members wanting one. The CDs have 750 pictures on them.

My wife and I went thru the pictures and sorted out all of the ones we didn't understand and that had no writing on the back. Mom went thru that pile and labeled almost all of them. We have a couple dozen at the most that we don't know history of.

My youngest Son will be the next "keeper" of the family history. After that, I don't have much control. Hopefully someone will take it on. I'm extremely honored my Mom instilled it in me. I keep the old photos in a large trunk that my Great Grandfather brought with him from Germany when they came to America. When we have family gatherings I bring out the trunk and let family look thru it. The important documents such as their ship boarding documents I keep in protective sleeves.

I can't track my family back as far as yours. But it's important just the same. Thanks for everything you've shared on this thread. I look forward to any and all comments and updates.

Awesome post Ovrszd. There are so many questions I want to ask my parents about their parents. But they were older when I was born and now as they are gone and I slow down, I realize I can never get that back again here on earth.

Yep. Hard life lesson right there. My Mom's been gone 6 years. I still have questions. So when appropriate I start conversations with my kids/grandkids about things "back then". I think I'll have a huge list of questions when I die. Then I am comforted by the belief that at that moment I'll know the answers.

My paternal grandmother passed just 4 1/2 months before my grandfather.
It was her parents, and her grandfather that lived across the hollow in this house

Of all the land my cousin owned, this land is better than my grandparents.
I contacted our lawyer last night again regarding an offer to buy the land from my cousins estate. Trying to buy before they get realtors involved.

This is porch still barely on the G grandparents house.

Interesting feature with a door to the porch roof. Was that so you could sit on the roof on summer nights when it was hot & stuffy inside?

Yes^
I would move those few long upright boards but that's it. The picture angle to me is about perfect as well as winter, no greenery. I'd have a quality print made, framed and on wall of my house! I like everything about it.
