Lifespan of a newer Deere tractor - how long do you expect your tractor to last?

I'm still trying to figure out how you can use a tractor hard and get 10,000 hours out of a set of tires ???

Tires wear from use on concrete or slippage on rocks. Get in the rock free clay of the grain belt and tires go forever. I've got a Deere 5520--85 HP--and I changed the tires to radials when I bought it new. Tires are now 10 years old with 600 or 700 hour on them and look like new. They still have almost all of the little rubber nibs on the tread. Since the tractor sits in a dark shed when not in use there is zero cracking and they look perfect.

I have seen many 30 or so year old tractors treated similar to mine and the tires almost always look excellent.

It is tax time and preparer suggests next year to purchase new tractor and tools. the Proration of 5 years has run out.
The now old 4520 J.d. is worth more for trade in with 2200 hours and will need tires if kept.
4 whl drive is locked In because something has came loose inside transmission will need to be separated to find out the cost.@125 and hour 2 workers each.
Front tires already replaced because of punchers and hole to big to patch. 1 rear cannot locate to seal a slow leak
FEL has been welded and reinforced due to lifting rock and logs.
The MX6 tossed the shaft before could know if was a good purchase.
Fuel gage never know how much diesel unless fill before using. always reporting low fuel.
But knew when purchased the work to be done would be rough and it done it well as planned.

Will purchase a another J.D. but with a different dealer . farther away but will do warranty work.

Treat your body with respect, and it will last a long time...
Treat whatever Tractor Brand Name you have the same way, and it will last a long time as well. When something breaks, then fix it. don't wait. Preventive maintenance is the cure for long agravation and expenses. Regular fluid level checks, and good filter management are common sense.

My 1965 JD710 still runs, and has given me good service in the seven-ich years I have owned it. Just about everything is cast iron, sheet metal excluded. hours unknown.

The problem with John Deere, is they want more than a peice of the pie in many areas. Why trying to get the whole pie...?
By the way, my next tractor may be coming from a reputable Korean manufacturer...

When we had a Ford 1710, the engine needed a rebuild at 1500 hours (right after we purchased it) because of a previous owner messing up the frame rails so that the loader was not properly attached and caused the engine to spin a bearing (they had stripped out 2 mounting bolts and rather than fixing, they just welded them into place).

After the rebuild, we put 3000 hours on the tractor. The frame actually wore out before the tractor, so that every time we used the loader for anything significant, it caused a leak at the hydraulic pump. No load, no leak. The tractor actually ran fine and we were tempted to keep it just for mowing, but it was worth more as a trade in. 4500 hours on it.

I think the rule today is look at the track record of the machine you plan to buy. If a lot of new technology I wait a few years on that model.
Good maintenance is the major factor in longevity. Also the right size for the work at hand.
Look for strong frame construction and a proven engine design.
My friend has a 1958 Ford 8N. Still runs great with only routine maintenance. Uses it to till 25 acres. His family bought it new in 58.

I expect my 03 Kubota BX2200 to last the rest of my life. (30+ years). Not as sure about my JD D130.

Just curious what rpms some of your JDs turn to achieve 540 rpms at the pto. I know a lot of utility tractors have to turn 2500 engine rpms to run the pto at 540. That was something I didn't consider when buying our most recent tractor and it concerns me. Makes sense that tractors that turn less would have more longevity.

Thanks

This is going to be somewhat dependent on engine size. My 2320 is close to 3000 rpm for rated speed. If you move up to the larger engine on the 2520, it drops to about 2600. Engine wear is largely based on the distance the bearing surfaces travel. A smaller shorter stroke engine with small bearings can run higher rpm with the same wear as a larger longer stroke engine at lower rpm.

Not a concern in any way shape or form if pto speed is 2500 engine rpm. It's not on an irrigation pump running WOT 24/7 for six months of the year. You and the next two owners will never wear out that dastardly 2500 rpm engine.

I think the new tractors may last as long but the question is how well do they age? What I mean by that is lets compare a John Deere 3020 to a John Deere 6330 which is a little bigger. First off will the hood last 40 years without needing to be repaired or replaced due to cracks? Second lets compare all the electronics to the 3020. The 3020 had none and the new tractor has all kinds. Obviously the electronic stuff such as sensors will fail and need replaced at some point. When these failures happen can you diagnose and repair yourself? Will you need to send it to John Deere and get a nice big bill? A 6330 is not a Tier 4 machine but if it was how much added cost over the life of the tractor will that add? Another thing I notice is all the materials on all the newer machines of any brand appears to be cheap. We have given up metal for cheap plastic that gets brittle and breaks at some point. There are four Deere combines run on our farms. Two are 9870's and the other two are S690's. Within a day of each other the same belts and other parts on the S690's break. This new machines are just not made to last like the old ones. The way the new ones are designed to last the test of time is by adding new parts on a regular basis.

5000h isn't much on a engine with normal use, 10 - 12000h might be when tings start to wear down but many engines still works great.

Many of the tractors here on the forum are very small and might be of a cheaper design so hoping for 15000h on a 20hk Kubota might be a bit optimistic.
