I've been thinking about picking up a 55 gallon drum, fill it about 3/4 up with scrap steel bits & sand/dirt/rocks from the back 40, and welding some pins to it for the 3 point to use as a ballast box too. Would be a total cost of about $20...

Almost a requirement on an old tractor with loader! I will say, having a heavy but short ballast box can be very handy at times. I need to build one as well.

Look for an older bigger machine

I got my mahindra 485 for $5k with rotary cutter and loader and forks. I sling engines, pallets and all sorts of junk with my loader.
