Light connection help!!!

OK so I installed movable lights (like on the "Moveable/Removeable Lights" post).

I hooked into the power connection under the seat of my BX2200 (power only with key on). Ran a ground to an available bolt. Then took power and ground wires to a switch. From switch I wired two C.lighter type outlets.

Wired the male plugs to lights, rigged up the magnet bases on the lights and ran a test.

With lights plugged in and switch OFF, I turn the key on and instantly blow a fuse (BX 2200 silanoid - 20 amp).

With lights plugged in and switch ON, turn key on and light all work as should. With key still on I turn switch OFF and blow the fuse again!??

I know I must have something wronge but I can't seem to find it /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Guy, I think you have your added switch miswired. Explain a bit about the switch (Single Pole single throw SPST, Double Pole single throw DPST ect.) Also the lighter outlet cases are usual grounded, perhaps you have misswired them. Is the case of the lighter outlets in contact with the tractor frame? Are the cases of the lights in contact with the tractor frame?

I did not use the "other wire". I am grounded to the frame.

The switch is a toggle with two poles. I connected the ground to one side and power to the other. I believe it was backwards from what switch said (ie: OFF was ON, so I switched the connections but I don't think it made any dif. Plus the on/off plate looks like it turns around so it would read correct).

On the plug-ins and plugs;
There are two wires, one goes to the "Center" and one goes the the outer casing. On the female side, I wired the power wire from switch to one and ground wire from switch to the other. ( I can't remember which went to center and which went to the casing). On the male side (connected to the lights) I made sure the wires for center and casing would line up to the female plug.

I think I did a test as far as which wire from light (red or white) to which wire of the plug. I believe it worked either way but only one way would light up the little indicator light on the plug. So that's the way I connected it.

Hope you can follow this. The tractor is not here (it's at the cabin 80 miles away), so I going by memory, but pretty sure what I have said is accurate.

The outlet cases are plastic on the outside and are not in contact with frame. The lights are attached to a magnet and attached to frame.

Guy, the wiring should be as simple as Pine Ridges attachment with the addition of the lighter sockets. You really have no need to wire the ground to the switch. You do need a good ground wired to the case of each lighter outlet. The switched power should be wired to the center terminal of the lighter outlets. In addition the lights you are wiring may have a case ground, so make sure you don't wire it to the switched power.

Sounds like there's where your problem is. The switch is only used to "break/switch" the positive wire. If you connect a neg to one side and a pos to the other side, the instant the switch is thrown, the fuse blows.
Look at PineRidge's drawing..........that's how it should be.
