The rod oven is to keep 7018 dry which it is a Low Hydrogen rod, and if moisture gets in the flux it can form hydrogen gas bubbles in the weld bead from breaking down the water molecule. And while I am sure a nice hot fresh 7018 just out of the oven would be ideal, I have gotten by just fine with just keeping them in a rod holder with a sealed gasket. Harbor Freight has holders at reasonable prices as does others.

Does it matter where I get my rods? Example, welding shop or Harbor Freight? 7018 1/8" rods.

In the first picture middle row, I notice that there are no BB's at the left and a noticable number at the right and I can't figure out what caused it. Can you enlighten me, please?

Others may differ, but I haven't had much luck with Harbor freight rods. I have had good luck with Hobart, Lincoln and US Forge rods.

Only thing I can think of is, the rod got so hot at that point the flux was coming off the rod. Cause the weld went ape **** on me.

Just picked up some rods. Looked at E6011, E6013, and E7018 all were 1/8" rods. I grab a 5lb box of E6011, the little chart said it would work on old rusty metal. I will be grinding to clean metal where I am welding, but figure this would be a good starting point.
