looks like the GM dealer in my home town got the axe today. I also heard the dealerships 45mi. on either side of me are closing too. Nearest dealer will be 100 mi away. Were also supposed to be losing the pointiac / Buick dealer too.

No word on the chrysler dealer yet, but i dont imagine theyll stay. If there wasnt enough sales for the GM dealer (i find that hard to believe because theres lots of GMs on the road here, probably more than ford) then theres no way theres enough for chrysler.

To add insult to injury, the local GM and pointiac dealerships just built new showrooms within the last year or so. Ive heard they have over 1million invested in each of the new dealership buildings.

How does gm expect to sell vehicles when the nearest service is 100mi away? Tow your vehicle there??????

Its really going to hurt the guys still around. All those cars on the lots of the closing dealers are being blown out. Around here the Dodge dealer is taking $6,000 off sticker and will still deal. My dad is looking at a Challenger. What is going to end up happening is everyone in the market is going to get something and then sales will be lax for the next two years. And like you said, how is a company going to be stronger with less presence?

It's funny reading your post because 1/2 the people, like yourself, rip GM a new A--hole for closing dealerships, the other 1/2 rip them for having 4 times as many dealerships as Toyota.

See my last post. GM & Crysler have 2-4X as many dealers as Toyota. Toyota sells more cars than anyone now, so they must know that it doesn't take a lot of dealers to be the biggest & most successful automaker in the world.

Drastic times take drastic measures. Nobody (except GM & Chrysler haters) wants to see this happen.

I think there needs to be some consolidation, dont get me wrong. We have 2 Gm dealerships in town (pointiac and chev). Town to my west and east also have 2 dealerships apiece. We have 2 toyota, 2 mazda and 2 honda dealerships to cover this same area.

6 GM vs 2 Toyota.... I think there is place for 3 GM dealers total (maybe 2 because the town to my east is quite small), But 6 is WAY too many.

Edit: Latest news is the pointiac / buick may be staying put for the time being... who knows what the final outcome will be.

I am not a GM or Chrysler Hater. I want them both to survive. GM just needs to cut the product line by about 60% and get the quality back up. Chrysler needs to get the small things fixed and the reliability up. They both make good products. Just feel the Ford Truck line leads the pack. Heck, I even own and drive a GM about 75% of the time. It does give me the most problems of my 4 vehicles but its still cheap to drive and very reliable.

I mean I would love to have a Dodge Challenger (where the Hemi belongs) or a Chevy Corvette. Just wont see me driving any of the trucks from either one again, too many bad memories.

I realize they must do drastic things. I am just worried dumping current inventories on the market at a loss will hurt the surviving dealers and hurt future sales for the next 24 months. It also seem with GM, at least in my area, the buyers are 90% older folks. Younger people, say 35 or younger drive Foreign and Ford products. I am worried if the older folks have to drive 60 miles to a dealership in the big city they may chose to buy another brand.

No one says you have to buy from Walmart or China. Last I checked, we still have choices.

You are absolutely right we can go to any one of the other -----marts and buy things made in China, we do have a choice.
