Load Max - Rating

If your going to buy another coupler, there is one called the load leveler, I believe mind is rated for 30,000lbs, there is a 25,000lb load leveler also.

Here is a pic to give you an ideal, there is a handle on top of the coupler to adjust the height of the trailer.
Did that coupler come with your trailer or did you add it? You would have to drill a hole in the top of the tube on the trailers that I have seen to retrofit.

The couplers that I am familiar with have either two bolts that press against the drop tube or one bolt and a pin. In spite of having the two bolt style torqued to spec, I have had them settle after hitting an abrupt dip in the road.

I have not had a trailer with the single bolt/pin style. Wonder if the pin spacing is a problem with getting the right height?

While we are talking coupler ratings, I would remind everyone not to forget your ball rating on the truck if you are getting into some serious weight.

It was an add on when i bought it, I think it was an $150 up grade. All i wanted was a heaver coupler, didnt know it was a load leveler, it is nice to have, and it has one locking lug on the side for locking it down once i got it where i want it.

Thanks for the input. I guess if it was so easy to upgrade why won't the manufacturer offer that upfront. I know PJ does so that is why I wondered if it was possible. I would have no problem paying to register and to upgrade the coupler to 30K coupler but will have to see what dealer comes up with this week. The tires are rated at load of 3520 lbs each so that put the total for the tires at 28,160lbs, which would be ok to handle a larger capacity.

I've had 3 Loadmax's now and love em. My newest one is identical to yours except I have the triple ramps and 12K axles. As said, the 10K axles offer a 22,000 GVW and the 12K axles offer a 25,990. I'm sure the trailer will take more, perhaps a legality/liability issue. I've towed a 10 ton dozer on mine several hundred miles with no problem. The brakes are fantastic on these axles.

Good luck!

Not sure what type of axle you have. On the dexter axles, the 12K have 5"wide brake pads, and the 10K has 4"wide brake pads, and yes the brakes on these 12K are nice. And on the axle tube thickness, the 12K is .44"thick and the 10K is .250 thick.

Load-Trail allows de-rating if the dealer requests it before sale but up-rating is not allowed. It makes sense off course as if you could do so why wouldn't you have done so in the beginning. A 22K trailer is plenty for me at this point and I would not want to risk overloading it, which can result in injury or worse.
