Loan a Yanmar

Well, the neigborly thing to do would be to ask what needs to be done and decide if you're up to taking on the task. I would personally just offer to help him out, even if I'm not overly familiar with them but that's who I am. I've asked neighbor's if they could help level out some land before and they have brought their tractor over and ran it themselves. He may have asked thinking you may just offer to help. Could be a good way to make a freindly neighbor though!

I will do as everyone has suggested, decline the offer. I had a worker on the farm who broke ever single tractor, skidsteer, tool he touched. A simple reflection onto his use of the tools made the decision an easy one.

Still amazes me that people think they can jump on a piece of equipment and think they can properly operate it, (beyond starting and driving) never mind it can take months of use to get comfortable.

Rented a full size hoe almost 40 years ago to dig my new sewer line to the street and was struggling a bit but getting there, a guy pulls up in a black BMW and walks over to me and says you don't know what your doing get off and I'll do it. He hops on and about 2 hours later it was done. I still had know idea who he was when he walked over to introduce himself, he lived 300 yards down the road and we've been close friends since.

I often do snowblowing, road repair, etc for the neighbors just because I feel like it. Once a neighbor asked if he could pay me to always snowblow his driveway. I said it would cost over $30,000+ (probably $40k+ now) to replace my equipment if something goes south - so, no. I don't think non-owners have any idea how much tractors & equipment cost

The other thing might be is that he sees borrowing an "old tractor" as like borrowing a wheel barrow- no big deal. So, he's really not familiar with equipment. Wanting to use it for an extended time as well kinda suggests that.

Aside from that, that would be like asking me for the loan of my Mustang... No way.
