Loaning out tractor/implements

   / Loaning out tractor/implements #81
Just a thought, If I were to borrow something of the nature of a tractor or other expensive tools, wouldn't my homeowners insurance pay for damage done to their equipment as a liability claim..

25 Years ago I borrowed a small 3.5 hp outboard motor from a buddy and some stole it from my rented garage....My Co insurance paid him for it....

Would this be the same case if it just got damaged..??

I really doubt a homeowners policy would take care of normal wear and tear or even abuse to a power equipment. Stolen is much different.
Groups of people are different loan-wise. Some loan and borrow at the drop of a hat and everything works out well for them untill they get burned good. My parents and uncles worked that way for years and it seemed to work. Of course the one with the equipment was everybodies best friend.
I have noticed that the people who "generally" want to borrow things are busy spending their money on "fun" things.
My brother for example wants to use my log-splitter, cement mixer, tractor and whatever else, but he is sitting there with a new super-glide in the garage and 3 new 750cc 4 wheelers. Not the cheap ones either. It's not hard for them to rip off a couple thousand bucks for a stockpile of guns just for the sake of collecting them. They just don't want to part with their money for those things. He just put in an outdoor wood-burner and now he is going around trying to borrow and doing a good job of it, trailers, skid-steers, log-splitters ans so on. If you need one and will in the future, just buy or rent.
Also, it would not seem fair to loan out some motorized equipment and then have them start it up and through no fault of theirs, it just breaks. You could definitely lose a good friend if they are expected to fork out $500 to fix something when it was just its time to go. The same logic would be if I would borrow an expensive piece of equipment and started it up and it broke. I would hate to fix it.
I agree with many other posts that if something has to be done, the operator goes along with the tool. Especially if is worth more than a few dollars. If I go along and it breaks, then no one can complain, especially me.

I'll loan out to trusted friends with the "if you break it, you repair it" agreement. I abide by the same. :)

when someone asks repeatedly to borrow my tractor.. or to have me help them ( which i don't mind helping familly and friends ).. after a while I hunt them up a cheap ford 00 series..usually can find some in the 1200-1800$ range, and tell them that they should buy it.. it's a great deal... most of the time they fall for it.. :)

that or.. one time I had a buddy always asking me to come out and disc and mow.. one time I saw a ford 1220 broke down in his shed. ( died of maintenance issues.. ) before i left that day i had aired the tires which were old and cracked but held air.. changed the oil ( looked like tar ).. cleaned air and hyd suction strainer.. patched a small hole in the rear axle in a section that was very thin metal he had backe dinto something and knocked an acorn sized hole in ( had the piece of metal duck taked to it.. used epoxy to fix. changed the oil in his rotary cutter gearbox, and charged the old battery.

when i left, that tractor ran.. it smoked a hair but started and ran... a few ys later he sold the place and managed to get 3500$ out of that tractor that had been previously dead. had not touched it maintenance wise since I left that day.. though he did mow monthly with it.. poor thing...~!

The way I get around loaning tractor or implements is 1 ) not owning a trailer or tow vehicle to transport ( no need ). 2) Not having insurance to work off my own property. If they offer to transport and say they have road and property insurance I simply say, "drop off your policies, trailer, and tow vehicle to me and I 'll mechanically go over the trailer and vehicle for defects and review your policies. Won 't take me but about 6 months and I 'll get back to ya. " If that angers them, then oh well.

I know not to loan things as I've been burnt a couple of times way back when. Didnt heed my gut a couple of months ago and loaned my brand new chainsaw to my neighbor (really good guy). He just needed to cut one limb off and saw it up. I thought, what can happen? He brought it back full of dirt....where he let the bar go into the ground as he cut the limb up.

20 years ago when we moved to our new home place at the end of a long dead end road the 1st thing i did was put a sign out ( tractor for hire ) with a triple the going hr. rate at the bottom. Nobody has asked me do any work for them. Guess that was too pricey for them.

No! No! No! No! Don't do it!

How many actually loan tractors or equipment to friends?

Implements - yes, if I know the tractor/implement is a good match.

Tractor - no.
