and the begining of this thread is what always happens. We start off playing on all of our sympathy. We always go to the touching, tear jerking story to prove a point that some hold.

So far in the tear jerking story that is used....there has been no evidence as to what the man really died from. Could a ROPS saved his life? No evidence, just tear jerking emotion. Could seat belts have saved his life? No evidence, just tear jerking emotion.

This is how so many of our stupid ridiculous laws get put in place....the old "well if we can save the life of just one person," or "we need to do this for the Children."

Here is my philosophy. I don't wear hearing protection, or a seatbelt. I don't put a mask on to keep out the nasty dirt. I don't own a tractor with a ROPS or a seatbelt. I want to have the diesel smoke and fresh air blowing in my face. I want to feel and LIVE life as it was intended to be. Fully allive until I die.

I am also not stupid....when someone is backing a tractor into a piece of equipment to hook up to the three point hitch...I don't stand behind and between the tractor and equipment. I don't ride a motorcycle without a helmet, and I wear a seatbelt while driving a car.

I feel sorry for some of you. You are afraid of herbicides. Your children never have known the pain of getting a bloody nose from crashing their bicycle. You almost go to the stupidity of putting up safety nets around the base of trees....for fear your kids may fall while being a kid and climbing it. I mean honestly...

Why not just live life???? By the way, did anyone ever ask the man who died, where he would like to be when his number came up and it was time to check out???? Do you suppose he might have told you, on the seat of his tractor????

Golly sakes, be sure to wear your hearing protector, put on a helmet, fasten your seat belt, oh and by the way.....I have another idea.....make sure you wear an extra large protective cup....you never know, you might get high centered when getting off your tractor and hurt your ability to reproduce.

WarrenF--that's the way my Dad and his Dad lived--my grandad, born in 1866 (you read that right) finally died from his reckless ways at the age of 97 having survived the Comanches and who knows what all. Pop didn't make it as long--he went down at 85 but Alzheimers caught him. Don't know if his disdain for seat belts induced the Alzheimers or not. As Longstreet said to Lee in "Gettysburg" I am now a sole of caution but I still don't want some G man cramming his rules down my throat. Wind in my face--that says it all.

Yep, I don't like laws that require you to only protect yourself; not protecting anyone else. And that from a guy who has religiously used seat belts since 1962:D, both in cars and on the tractors. But of course, I also have even more hours on tractors that had no seat belt or ROPS.:D I felt the same way about helmets for motorcyle riders, but I've also seen a couple of studies showing the cost to the taxpayers for caring for the maimed and crippled who might not have been injured so badly had they used a seat belt or wore a helmet. So maybe there's a logical reason for requiring such. And I still don't like it.:)

Bird, i'm afraid as taxpayers we are paying for many more people than helmetless motorcycle riders. If we are going to legislate that, why aren't we legislating peoles weight that when overweight there are many more in hospitals that we are paying for. I stopped at a cross walk last week to let this family cross. There was a little girl, her brother, (8-10 years of age.) the mom and the dad. Collectively I'd guess they approached 800#. They looked to be in there 50's but they were probably 30 something. If I had a choice, I'd pay for all the helmetless vegetables rather than pay for what is a rampant epidemic in this country. I need a license to throw a string with a hook on the end of it into a body of water and yet I get to watch peole who have had 3 or 4 crack babies who are in DCYF stand on a corner holding up signs stating "Government cuts unfair to unwed mothers" they also have the freedom to have as many crack babies as they want because they are on dope and they do not have to pay for a thing. This is way more crazy to me than paying for people in accidents.

Furthermore we have those in Government telling us and our kids that "drug abuse is bad." Notice how carefully they say that. So therefore according to all who want to CONTROL MY LIFE....are telling me and my kids that it is okay to use highly addictive drugs...just don't ABUSE THEM.

On one side of a hospital we have the neo-natal unit. It is designed to save babies born early. Then on the other side, we have the abortion unit killing babies before they have come to full term.

Then we get the typical, SEEE SEEEEE...we must legislate that people need to wear seatbelts on tractors and all tractors must have ROPS. "IF we can just save one life......" People wonder why so many in our great nation are psychotic. These laws and this mindset is simply INSANITY.

Oh, for sure, lots of misinformed folks out there. We make fun of rules whenever we can, it is a part of our rebellious nature. In California when my wife bought a couple AR7 "survival" rifles it was humorous to note that you HAD TO BUY a trigger lock with them. These are the little mag fed semi-auto .22 rifles originally developed as survival equipment for pilots. They break down and the action and barrel are stored in the hollow stock. Due to the close tolerances of the form fit of the interior of the stock it is totally impossible to configure the rifle for transport with ANY trigger lock in place. So the trigger lock you are forced to buy can't be used with the rifle without forgoing the feature of the rifle that is the only reason to buy it.

There are always exceptions not handled well in certain instances but that does not negate the general intent in the majority of cases.

I'm sure my neighbor had no intention of dieing in the name of personal freedom of choice. He died because he was blatantly ignorant as many others are.

Pat

Or maybe he died because he could not afford a modern tractor with all the bells and whistles.

Glad to see you have all the answers. Who would post something like this about their neighbor????

If you want the freedom to choose not to have a tractor with ROPS, not wear a helmet on a motorcycle, not to wear a seat belt in a car etc.... than you also have to choose to let manufacturers produce machines without safety guards on belts and pulleys, can foods in lead sealed containers and sell you drugs that are not checked for safety. After all, you should be smart enough to choose which products you purchase, right? Right??? That's what you're suggesting by saying government should not tell you what you can and cannot do, right? If the government (society, us, we are the government, by the way) shouldn't be able to tell you how to live any aspect of your life why should we, the government have anything to do with ANY aspect of safety and common sense at all???

I'll bet the folks here that are spouting off about personal freedoms would be the first to file a lawsuit if their child was injured by a toy that malfunctioned and put the kid's eye out!

The ole absence of government regulations. Any one got a couple of extra "Trillion" laying around it looks like the absence of government regulations is going to cost someones great, great, great children a lot of money when the dust settle from the (No Regulation or Rules Wall Street Mess) Some times we need rules and requlations to protect us as individuals and tax payers from another expense.

If the government (society, us, we are the government, by the way)

That hasn't 'really' been true, except on paper, for a LOOOOONG time.

The 'we' in 'we are the govt' is relegated tot he few people that can afford to get ellected.. or have enough popularity to get elected. .. sure.. we may make a difference in 4-6 ys when we don't like the fact that the reps don't vote our way.. then some other smhuck gets in and the whole provcess starts all over... The average individual person has no real say in any govt.. right down tot he city councel level... at best.. it works like a comittie.. and everyone knows what comes out of comitties....
