I wish my '13 Silverado had a tailgate step.

I just Googled "tailgate step" and all sorts of aftermarket options showed up.

It was because they didn't have one in the works or a decent tailgate to support it.

On a side note I really like the new chevy bumper steps. To me it's a practical idea that works.

Mythbusters did a show and rover just that. Better mileage with tail gate up.

I was going to mention that, as a self proclaimed reality TV ***** I have seen all but the Lost mythbusters episode that they pulled in the second to last season as they deemed it to racy or inappropriate for tv.

I thought I remember them doing that and you either wanted the tail gate up or you wanted it removed. The wing it made when it was down would cause turbulence which brought down the gas mileage. Even those mesh gates were better than down.

I can tell you a tonneau cover helps mileage, at least in my personal experience.

They also did a special with gas mileage and AC on and windows up vs No AC and windows down and proved you got better MPG with windows up and AC on. I can tell you in the vehicles I have in real world that's not true as I track it. It says that its more true I guess on modern cars but I know on my 04 Sequoia its better without the AC on and the mythbusters episode that visited that was probably 5 to 6 years ago so the vehicle was not that old then. I also know my 01 highlander is a bit better without AC and my 1990 ranger is like 10-12% better without AC and windows down.

Theory was that windows created turbulence that slowed the truck.

My uncle had one where the tire would not come down, had to be towed, bed removed, and the tire carrier cut off.

No matter the brand is drop mine once a year and lube it.

I had a flat in my Ranger in college. I could not get the bolt out that held the carrier up, nor could the truck that was sent out by by roadside ins coverage. Had to go to my father in laws shop and heat it up cherry red and bead and then get it off!! The shop they towed me too tried with impacts and could not get it and quit as they were worried they would break it off and wouldn't do any more. they just fixed the flat at that point.
