Got a chance to try out the new fitting this afternoon.
First thing I did was compare the diameter with the standard one. My biggest concern was that the new one would be much larger and wouldn't be able to get to some grease fittings. I was pleasantly surprised to find it isn't much larger at all. Even measured it with my handy-dandy Harbor Freight $1 special caliper. The original one is 10mm while the new one is 11mm. 1mm larger in diameter is all it is.
The the first test was using it on the gauge wheels on my belly mower. These wheels are greased the most out of everything I have needing to be done every other mowing. These are some of the most difficult also being that the wheel wants to turn as I would try to hold the gun hose/end in perfect alignment with the fitting. I've lost a lot of grease doing these and can be quite frustrating to keep it aligned to get the grease in.
My other concern was these zerks are positioned so that the gun fitting would have to be tight against the inside of the wheel to be properly aligned - there isn't much room there.
I was pleasantly surprised that the new connector went right on and locked on properly.
Once the fitting is locked on (all you do is release the lever and the slide lock is spring loaded and slides the outer part of the coupling forward) it didn't leak a drop. What is nice is that once it is locked on, it doesn't matter if you move the hose around and it won't leak at all.
I did have one small problem when I went to the rear wheels on the deck. The design much be just a tad different. The fitting would go on the zerk fine, but the locking slide would not quite go forward enough to lock it on. A quick couple swipes with a utility knife shaving away just a tad of plastic off the inside of the wheel gave it enough room.
So for me it is a success. Do I wish it were $15 or $20? Sure! But in the past 3-4 years I've become afflicted with a nasty case of RA. During those years I've had to give up most everything I consider fun which is mostly working outside and working on machinery. I've had to adapt and find ways so that I can do a lot of things (a lot thanks to Mrs. Coaltrain!). Greasing has been one of those challenges. I adopted the use of a pistol handle grease gun many years ago - so much easier to be able to hold the fitting on the zerk with one hand then pump with the other. Not so easy now as some days I can do neither and certainly not both together. With this setup I will be able to go back to a regular lever grease gun. I can attach the fitting to the zerk and let it go, then use two hands to pump the gun.
So yeah, I'm very happy with it!
