An innovative solution from Berg Equipment in Marshfield, WI

ATV Log Hauler ATV Log Hauler
retail price listed as $ 1,495
(Lots of detailed pictures that explain it)

Its really two trailers that connect together, allows you to pick up a log and straddle carry it.

Three ways to modify the design:
a) Make a bigger area under it so you can pick up more logs
b) Make it into a top carry system
c) Add a rack to the top for top and bottom carry

Another one is the Log Dog http://fivestarmfginc.com/atv-log-hauler.htm

And there is an old thread here in TBN http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/yanmar/156209-1510-d-upper-lift-arm.html

____

The wisest thing in the world is to cry out before you are hurt. It is
no good to cry out after you are hurt; especially after you are
mortally hurt. People talk about the impatience of the populace; but
sound historians know that most tyrannies have been possible because
men moved too late. It is often essential to resist a tyranny before
it exists. It is no answer to say, with a distant optimism, that the
scheme is only in the air. A blow from a hatchet can only be parried
while it is in the air.

PTO driven trailer Rimbo Sweden 2009 - YouTube[/url]I'v seen on like this a long time ago.. With the trailer axels being driven the trailer axels help hold you back going down hill... Best with a gear drive probibly...

It would only work in 1 specific gear or 1 specific gear per PTO speed(but you could turn off the PTO to drive in other gears), and you'd have to do some fiddling for it to line up right. I bet the vehicle in the vid uses a 2nd transfer case to drive the PTO at drive-line speed to make it work.

for a gear driven tractor with a 540 rpm pto and an axle with 31" tall tires and 4.10 gears;

540rpm/4.10gears * pi*31"= 12820 inches per minute = 769,223" per hour = 12 miles an hour at rated PTO rpm.
If my math is right; In my little tractor that would be somewhere between 3rd and 4th gear in high range. way to fast for the work in question. you'd need some seriously deeper gears, much smaller tires, or a reduction box for this to work.

I've also seen trailers with hydraulics to help drive in certain situations.

If your slipping and sliding going up or down a hill I don't think it will matter.. Your throttle is what controls the pto speed.. If your being pushed up the hill,, when you get to the top you pull it out gear.. the same when your going down hill..

The one I saw working was only used when the exrta help was needed..

Doesn't matter, It would still kill the engine on my little tractor if I couldn't at least halve the wheel speed, and I sure couldn't slam it into gear once I lost control on a hill.

like I said, there are hydraulic options that would work better for how you are wanting to do it.

here is one way

What about taking the differential and axle assembly off an old pickup truck, add that to the trailer, and hooking a hydraulic motor to the drive shaft end. Plumb the hydraulic motor to either your tractor remotes, or hook up an auxiliary pump to the PTO and add a flow control valve. Then include some way to quick-disconnect the hydraulic pump if you are towing the trailer over smooth roads / highway

or just using the entire rear of an old pickup (350 Dually would be stronger), create a trailer to haul the logs. You might want to lengthen the trailer frame with a pole/pipe for longer logs.

You might also see if you can hook up the old truck brakes to the tractor brakes/hydraulics for other stopping power in trailer

Here in the past back wen I was a kd and pulp wooding was going out there were a few powered traders built from ton stick wood trucks. ALot were pulled behind 8N Fords and uesd the over run clutches on them . My friend Jimmy made a living building them and before scrap got them all we got tos see a few. They were ued by folks that didnt want to put a nicer truck in the woods. They would go to the woods and load a load of stick wood and then bring it out and hitch to the truck and head to the rail yard.

They cut a truck fram under the cab and pulled the frames back together for a hitch. Then they hooked the tractor pto to the transmission on the frame. This had a pto on it for running a a stub axle winch and the trucks rear end. There was a mastercylinder they mounted the tractorfender. They used one master cylinder to work the truck axle brakes and the brake drum that runs the stick loader winch. Most old timers said they had enough gears selection in the truck trans and the tractor to make the gears match up. I saw an old man using one when I was 16. He had an 8N and was working in some rough ground. It was a help when empty but when it was loaded it really helped. He was gathering tops off a logging tract for fire wood. He was in secong gear alot and you could hear the overrun clutch clicking when the tractor was going faster thant the trailer. when it hit mud the trailer would catch up.

Dads Pasquali has a setting on the pto lever to sync the pto the pinionshaft for a power trailer.

This is an old camper trailer frame. Hauls lots of wood, has 1 braking axle. I haul with a 3/4 ton dodge.
Small trailer behind Steiner for limbwood and deadfalls.
Small wagon running gear that I cut into rounds right on the wagon, Works great and saves lots of handling.
Another wagon running gear with a longer reach for long stuff. We haul from a mile to 15 miles away. I also have a couple of dump trailers.

More pictures of the smaller wagon running gear and cutting on the wagon. The side posts are 2 1/2" steel tubing sitting in 3" steel tubing so they are removable.
Last picture is my bil's big dump trailer, it'll haul whatever we can load into it. Has pto driven dump.
