The gearmatic in the pic is one that I found in a blacksmiths shop. Gearmatic built them in several sizes and are used in different applications. Mostly I have seen them on log skidders, and I've seen a few on dozers.
I happened across this unit and paid 450, I also paid onother 250 for the actuater, it is like a brake resevoir that puts pressure to the friction or the brake release in the winch.
The advantage of having a pto winch is that they are much
faster.
I'm not sure on the pulling power of the mod 9. It will yard my tractor backwards with ease though. I would NEVER get behind a stump or chain the tractor to hold it while winching. I would be afraid of parting the tractor. As it is a 21/2' 40'long log is not a problem at all.
I have an 8000lb hydraulic mounted in my loader and it works quite well for retrieving or lifting. It would be too slow for anykind of serious log skidding if mounted on the rear though. My rig has 18gpm hyd flow. With that my line speed is almost the same as my tractor in 2nd gear in creep mode.
In the past I did build some 8000 and 12000 pto units that were 3pt. They work very well. The only problem with a worm drive is that if you are tight lined and can't get slack, it is almost impossible to get the locking dogs to release. I did overcome this though. If I can get my scanner back up I have some pics.
Basically, if you can find an 8-15000, depending on your tractor size, it is easy to build a frame and mount it. The one concern is that when you turn the shaft counterclockwise, like your pto facing the rear from the tractor seat, the the top of the winch turns toward you if it is an in frame mount and turns away from you if it is an upright that sits on the frame.
Not trying to steer you away from gearmatic, the application works well for me, I don't know the availability of them. The one thing to look for with the gearmatic if you come across one, is to take the top oil plug out and turn the shaft and make sure that the ring gear turns toward the front of the winch.
