While I look arround at many of these trees that are so rude as to fall in places that I don't want to chop them up, I'm thinking of a 3 point mounted hydraulic grapel, back up to the log, lower the 3 point, close jaws, raise 3 point, drag to convinent location, drop, return for more shouldn't be too hard with my spare hydraulic valve

Hey Napa,

There is a post in the Photo section with a couple pictures of what you're talking about. It looks like the best thing in the world!!! I'm not sure how a smaller tractor will handle the logs, or how big a log can be hauled with one, but it sure is interesting.

I only have a 35hp tractor, so it wont' work for me.

Hudson forest products would be a place you may need before you finish that project . they sell rotators and things for grapples

I work about 5 miles away from the original hudson (hudon's), which is where they make all of their bandsaw mills and other tools, so if you need some pics ( when you get DSL ), just let me know. Even though I hate to waste my time going and looking at more toys . Sounds like you're looking for something just like this:

Here's another, looks a bit further out to the rear, probably want a loader to offset the weight. Rear winches are also able to make a front end light. There's a reason skidders are so heavy.
