Log splitter build

I don't see why hitch and wedge on same end would be any harder to move.

It all depends on intended usage. I know a lot of guys that split wood and toss directly into their truck. If you also use the truck to tow the splitter.....having the hitch on the wedge end makes most sense. As you are much closer to the truck you will be tossing wood into, never have to unhook the splitter.

But I like the idea of a removable hitch that can go on either end:thumbsup:

I like to throw the wood on the ground and then use my grapple to move it to its final spot. Having the hitch buried in split wood makes it harder than necessary to move the splitter back to the barn. I usually tow my splitter with a lawn mower that would have to be unhooked. My future plans include building a drivable wood splitter using the same wedge design as this splitter.

Here is a video of the maiden split, I have the splitting ram hooked up backwards but you get the idea. The trailer coupler is going opposite of the wedge, I have a section of hitch tube getting welded under the 4 way bracket and I will tow a trailer behind the splitter and eventually have a chute to direct the splits into the trailer. I am not far from the bush so I load up and tow them both back, do my buisness then come home and toss the splits in my woodshed. I put a piece of wood sideways and deadheaded the ram and there is no noticeable deflection on the wedge or beam. I think my ram is small enough I won't have anything to worry about

Have you thought about putting a flow control on the 4-way to slow it down and make it more controllable?

Today I switched the hoses for the ram and rerouted a couple hoses. I made a riser for the valves that also acts as a tank vent. That's pretty much it, and a big garage cleanup. Hydraulic oil EVERYWHERE. I usually do that kind of stuff outside but it was raining all day

Yes there is a needle valve on each line

Yes there is a needle valve on each line

Did you adjust them any to fine tune it. It looked like in the video it was moving too fast to have much control.

Yes i adjusted them. The video was choppy because I was holding a camera, the spool wasn't bolted down and there was no handle on the valve.

Nice work.

I enjoy these threads. NOTHING brings out more "opinions" than a splitter build.

Continue to post pics and progress. Expect failure, anticipate success. :)

Not really a wrong way to build one.

Everyone is different. Build one that suites you, and is ergonomic for you. And if built well with quality components it will bring decades of good use

My first mod came after the first trailer load. Expanded the catch table. :)

I have been planning this for a few years and am making my best effort to not make changes haha. The other splitter has been the Guinea pig so I have a pretty good idea of the main things I wanted to change. This one will be operational by the weekend then I can start splitting a bit and get a better idea what I want for a catch table /chute ect.

I had intentions of adding a log lift but it might not work that great because of where my wheels are but I try to stick to stuff that in manageable by hand anyways so i will see how it goes

Welded the end plates on the rear of the beam and thr receiver underneath, made a stand and added some hose clamps underneath

My current splitter has a log lift. It's used all the time. Either to lift a large round or stack smalls on for faster splitting.

Anxious to see your finished product. Thanks for posting.

I was thinking a log lift would be handy as a table either way. Now that the tongue is on and it has some weight I'm going to try and cheat the hubs forward, as of right now I have 14" from the cutting edge to the tire
