Log Splitter recomendation

I run a Simplicity Legacy XL. Looking for a log splitter for it. With only about 5 gpm i'm worried it can't run models that work off the tractor's hydraulics. The pto driven ones seem to cost as much as the ones with their own engines.

Can anyone recommend a splitter that works well with this machine?

Welcome to TBN!

Isuspect you will find yourself in the same situation we did with our Kubota B2320, which, although it lists a total hydraulic flow of 8.3 GPM, anctually has a net of 4.7 because 3.6 GPM is tied up in the steering flow.

Having looked at ways to run a splitter off the PTO, which typically requires a PTO driven hydraulic pump and reservoir to run the hydraulics, it was way too expensive, and not a very efficient way to go.

We were much better off to buy a stand alone splitter (we bought a troy-bilt from Lowes on their 18 mo 0% interest deal). The Honda engine has been low maintenance and starts with one or two pulls every time.

In addition we found out that not needing to have the tractor tied to the splitter made processing our wood much more efficient. The maintenance on the splitter is also a lot cheaper and easier than that on the tractor.

Like PjysAssist, we bought a stand alone splitter and use the tractor to move the wood. We bought a DR Power kinetic splitter: they start at $1100 or so.

I like my stand alone from Northern tool. I like to be able to move the large rounds with a set of tongs and the front end loader. just pick them up ans set them on the splitter. Ed

I agree with the others. These are on sale all the time for $1000. I bought my used. Its about 10 years old and works great.

Your tractor will run any of them. Pressure determines the power. But low flow means low speed. It will be really slow.

I would get a stand alone model.

I agree, stand alone is the way to go... doesn't tie up the tractor, less hours on the tractor, and yes lots of times I'll split and throw the wood in the bucket to move it..
