My vote goes for a stand alone. We used to borrow a friend's stand alone for years. It was great because I parked our tractor perpendicular to the splitter with the FEL right there to my side. I split and stacked the pieces in the FEL immediately. One less handling. Very convenient. It was great. Had the need been there, I would have purchased a stand alone for this convenience.

Thanks for your input. I thought the same. I'll probably, aty this point, go with a standalone splitter.

Thanks for your thoughts. I'm on the fence right now. I know the American CLS model will work with the flow from the BX24, but it will be slow. On the other had, a towable, standalone splitter will be faster but more expensive.

I know I need to decide quickly since I have a lot of wood to split!

I thought the same thing regarding buying a cheaper 3 pt splitter, but with my tractor I would have to add the rear hydraulics and once all that is purchased the price was getting up there. I paid right at $2,000 for my splitter but I am not sure what they are selling for now. I have the model AM-24HH with the 13” wheels, fenders, chains and trailer 11/2” hitch. I changed the hitch over to a 2” hitch so it matches all of the other hitches I have.

The cycle time is about 13 seconds, but I have not seen a single time that I could split a log and then have another one ready before the ram was already back and stopped. I guess some people think this is very important, but I have slowed down a bit and find it faster than I could ever keep up with. A slower time would be even better for me at times! The unit weighs about 560 pounds but is nicely balanced and easy to move around by hand I need be.

I cut all of my wood to 16" and find myself moving the ram back to the approximate area and stopping the reverse travel. Then I pick up the next log to split. I have the four-way splitter attachment that works fine on certain diameter wood. They were pushing this and it was part of the package price. The sales guy told me if I can lift it onto the splitter it will split it. So far I have not found anything it would not split including some large elm that we split up last fall.

Most of the wood we burn is oak, maple, beach and some birch. I cut off from my own land so it is a process of cutting the trees hauling them to a staging area then cutting them to size. We burn about 6 to 8 cords a year so it is pretty easy to get ahead on the wood.

A friend of mine has the 3 pt hitch model that will split 4’ wood. It is really a monster and will give you a workout lifting and splitting 4’ wood. He sells cordwood in 4 foot lengths so it is good for his business. He runs it off from the hydraulics on his skidder and has plenty of power to operate it.

I always felt I could split our wood by hand believing it is good exercise. Once I got the splitter I realized how nice it was to not have to hand split any more.

I just bought a 3ph log splitter on E-Bay. But I built a place to put a 6.5 hp motor and reservoir because I don't have a tractor. I got it this way cause it was cheaper than buying one built already. I also had to buy a pump but still the total cost was under $600.

Take a look at the one on e-bay. It may be just what you're looking for.

eBay: Log Splitter, 3 Point Hitch Attachment 16 Ton (item 280134615649 end time Jul-20-07 20:00:00 PDT)

Joe did you get it yet? what is the quality like? Anyone else have any input?

Yea...I got it and it runs great. I have used it several times in the past week. It does seem to get a little warm (the fluid and hoses) but like other guys, I get tired after about two or so hours of splitting wood, so I give the maching a rest.

I got my camera back so I will be posting pictures of it here as well as on the Hydraulics Forum.

Nice work Joe. one question what is that paint color on the splitter???

Joe,what would be your thoughts be on mounting it on a tractor, BX series?
What was the weight of the shipment, because weight of attachments is a issue with the BX. The listing says designed for sub-compacts and this is a rather novel item at this point in time. I have to research the flow rate of the BX22 also.

ok, it appears the seller has a regular website and is the same guy on ebay. He has prices and several models listed on his site and free shipping east of the rockies. The 16HP 3PH model is listed at $595, with free shipping.
I'm bidding on an ebay listing because it appears about $100.00 cheaper if you pay the $105 shipping on the ebay listings.

The BX22 manual list 5.5 GPM for HYDRO FLOW and the spec on the splitter says it is designed for 7 GPM and below. Lift capacity of the 3PH is 680 LBS and I don't think the unit comes anywhere near that, even if you add a 60 lb log.
SO...... if all goes well I'll be tinkering around in a few weeks with my new ORANGE toy.

The site is The toughest Log Splitter available
