Log Splitters

Ilike the stand alone splitter, because i can haul it any where with an atv, leaving the mess in the woods. That being said consider having one with the wood exiting the opposite end of the hitch,so you can drive forward, and not have to move falling wood.Mines homemade so that wont help your selection .

Here are a few pics from this weekend.

We made some legs for the splitter, works great and makes it easier on the tractor when splitting real heavy wood, plus makes it easier to just pull up and connect the hoses.

And when needed, just take them off, lower it and roll the wood on. :)
Will, where did you buy the Wallenstein splitter and what did it cost you? They had one here, like yours but in green, at the local TSC store on sale for $650 or so a few months ago.

WOW!! That is an awesome price. Ours was part of the deal, our CCLT1042 paid for it. $800 was the price. Trinity Equipment is where we bought it, along with the tractor, blower, and MMM.

Was that a special price? If you see it again, grab it.

I always thought that I'd want a 3-point splitter for the same "one engine, one fuel" reason. Then I had to figure out how to pull the trailer too. And carry the big stuff with bucket. Ended up taking someone else's homemade splitter and adding my old riding mower engine and starting system (electric start is WONDERFUL!). Those parts combined with my supurb (not) welding skills yielded "FrankenSplitter". Not a site to behold, but functional and VERY low cost.

got pics of it ?:D

WilliamBos: How much flow does your tractor provide? I see the WX310 splitter has a recommended min flow of 10 GPM. What do you estimate the cycle time is with your set up?

I've been looking for something similar but the flow on my BX is only around 6 gpm.

I picked up this one from a local TSC store a couple of years ago and have been very happy with it. I especially like the position of the control spool lever which allows me to operate it by myself.

Since I took this picture I've replaced the crappy stand with an adjustable top-wind swing-away and made a log rest platform on the far side. Dropping splits on my foot got to be old in a hurry.

I've never tried anything it wouldn't split even a 18" gum that produced a lot of cussin' and fumin' on my part.

Years ago I owned a store-bought and a home made splitter that needed fixing as much as it worked so I was pleasantly surprised this little guy has held up so well. I think the current crop are far better made than those of 15-20 years ago.

Just my .02.

Our 1523 gives 5.4gpm at the remotes. The cycle times , the one time I did time it, was 60 seconds total. The log usually comes apart seconds after hitting the cutting edge. I cannot split wood that fast with an axe, so for us it works great.

Any other question, feel free to ask.

BTW, we re-painted it as soon as we got it, the grey had to go. :)

Yes, Will, I think that was a 15% off sale so it was $679-regularly $800.

I have the use of an old and small, 8 ton or so, gas splitter that will only split logs 19" at most. My wood stove can take 21" logs. It has an annoying feature that shuts the engine off when you run the cylinder too far open.

Despite the issues, it's sitting in my garage, free to use, so I am in no hurry to spend the $ on a newer but better splitter.

Did the stand/legs come with your splitter or did you add those on after?

WilliamBos: I've been looking for something similar but the flow on my BX is only around 6 gpm.

I think the 6GPM of the BX is total including the flow going to the power steering. I believe the flow available to implements (FEL, 3PH, Remotes) is only 3-4 GPM. Hard to find a 3PH splitter that will work acceptably fast at this flow rate. The new Powerhorse from Northerntool looks to be a good match as it's rated for 3GPM but splits in both directions. I only wish there were a Northertool store near me so I could see it before decidingwhether to buy it. Decisions, decisions!

My Dad added the legs, and we pin them on, so if they need to come off to roll large wood on, they can. Added them in early winter, so they will get a coat of paint this spring.

New, after the paint job.

Quick attach legs.
