Log Splitters

I cut over a wagon, so there is NO lifting, no matter how big the blocks are,

Then I roll the big blocks off the wagon right onto my splitters beam and push EVERYTHING through the 4-way wedge,

All powered by a 30hp Deutz diesel, that just slooooooly sips fuel...

As for wedge on the beam or cyl, I'll NEVER go back to the wedge on the cyl. design!!

BTW, I can have the beam any height I want...

SR-
In that last picture, it appears that, even with the 4 way wedge, those two top pieces will need to be muscled back for another pass. Does that represent only a small portion of your typical splitting?

There's no real muscling, I just roll one big pieces over backwards with one hand, back onto the beam. The other one, I roll sideways onto the table grate, or over back to sit on top on the wedge, until I need it.

I split a lot of crotches and big chunks, as anything of higher quality go to my BSM.

Thanks for asking...

My homebuilt was wedge on beam but when I bought a Troybilt I discovered that one is almost stuck with wedge on cylinder so they can be tilted up to use vertically. That puts the running gear/motor, etc. right in the way of using it horizontal. All the wedge on beam ones were at least another $1,000 - beyond my budget.

I'm with you - myTroybilt has never been verticle and never will be. I get enough backaches without bending way over to reposition blocks to be split.

Same here. Bought it on sale and with a 10% coupon....couldn't beat it at the time. Had mine for about 7 years now with no issues and the Honda engine is great.

Similar here except mine is a Yard Machines 25 ton going on year 9 now and heat with wood

one thought on (some) of these 21, 25, 27, and 33 ton splitters is that they are actually MTD units

At least these are - from a recall years ago- mine included https://www.troybilt.com/wcsstore/M...S/en_US/media/Log_Splitter_Product_Recall.pdf

Mine has always split well but has had little problems over the years including

breaking the log support wing bolts off from time to time- may have something to do with dropping 30+ inch rounds from the tractors grapple on it
flat tires - finally installed tubes- nothing like trying to reseat a bead with wood splinters in the bead area
about time to replace parts of the lovejoy coupler - something I didn't notice until the last oil change.

overall very happy with this splitter for what i paid -$1050

ps. with everyone else who will never split in vertical mode either...

Put the splitter near a pile of rounds, sit on a bucket and split away.

I will never stand/bend over a horizontal splitter again

Oh Yeah, sit down and tty to get leverage moving a 100 lb block around, no thanks.

What leverage? You roll the 'round' under the wedge. I've been doing it for years. It's the best way to save my fused spine.... And it works, with very little effort.

I think wood splitters are one area where personal preference comes to the surface quickly.

I've never saw anyone doing it wrong for them. I've saw many, many, many doing it wrong for me.

I actually like the wedge on ram but I think that's just where I started so I learned to use it. On the large rounds I make the first hit down the middle and let one half roll off the far side. Then I split the half I still have in my hand like a pie sorta kinda, just keep chewing split size pieces off till it's gone then I grab the other half and begin again.
