Almost everything I have on the ground is spruce pine. Around here, that is pulp wood. I do have enough decent sized red oak and poplar on the ground to make up a truck load. I'm keeping those seperate and trying to make contact with someone who can get them.

Sorry you have had so much trouble but loggers like pavers can have a bad name. Wish I knew more about logging but that is one of many things I know very little about. By the way you have a very nice tractor

There are definitely a lot of hacks out there. My good buddy was a logger for probably 10 years and I helped him and his old logging buddy clear a tract of land similar to the op in Cumberland County. Mostly doing delimbing and root ball separation work. It was one the funnest things I've done.

If you ever want to watch a full on operation, try to attend a Southern Logging Expo were they are working a tract of land. I've been to a couple to help my friend setup his old chainsaw expo and it is a sight to see. All the big vendors are there doing everything from harvesting to chipping. The big harvesters and chippers are awesome to watch. I even got to hang out with Bobby Goodson at the last one I attended.

The initial timber cruz (him walking thru the give a written estimate) was 450. Then when I hired him to it is 10% of whatever I get. If I don't sell the timber, he gets a guaranteed 3 grand. If I had it to do over, I wouldn't. I expected him to have someone in there cutting soon after I closed on the property in august last year. Live and Learn.

I just hung up with a forester I met a couple years ago. He does his sales in two stages. The first is an inventory and marking for which he charges $35/hour plus mileage and the second is the actual timber sale for which he charges 10%. A written forest management plan runs around $900-1000.

Where in Chesterfield are you? I may have a couple contacts for you. I'm looking at thinning a 5+ acre pine stand on my property so the bigger trees can mature at a faster rate and will be getting a couple different crews out to give me an estimate.

If I had the time I would offer to come out there and help you for free. I love running a saw. If you don't mind, could you pm me the name of the guy you were using? I would hate to make the same mistake.

The farm is in Crozet. It's a weekend thing for me. And vacation as well.

I went back over the contract this morning. He is guaranteed $1,000 in commission. I had also paid about 450 for the initial cruise. I think at this point I am still on the hook for another500 bucks to him. Don't like that but I can live with it. If he comes in with another logger we will look at that, but he will be required to be onsite much more than he was. Not knowing what the place has looked like for 3 weeks is pretty bad.

Is there a requirement in the contract for how much he is required to be onsite? I would want a discount for the stuff that you are dragging out and the general mess caused by the first logger.

It says "periodically".

I know right where that is. I was born in Waynesboro and started school in Charlottesville. Still have some family in the area too, those left alive anyway. Maybe you should start over with someone new because it sounds to me like you got a bad apple.

I have recently met what seems to be a stand up guy that runs a logging operation on the side. His cousin is always telling me how blown away he is at how hard Ronnie works. I have been meaning to get him out to my place to check out my pine stand and also do some maintenance on his saws for him. He is based out of Appomattox, but does sub work for Lonestar here in the Richmond area. I'm sure he could meet you in person and talk about what it is you need done. I will pass on his contact info to you once I get in touch with him if it is ok? He may be open to working your property up near Charlottesville. Btw, I may have already asked you this a while back, but where in Chesterfield are you located?
