Wow. Typical internet ebb and flow. Crazy, but this is a stereotypical thread that is repeated hundreds of times a day.

Property ownership alone does not dictate that all others around them have to pound sand. There is responsibility that we all have to our neighbors. Whether it's managing woodland in the NW, stripping coal in the south or draining water wells in the Great Lakes, there are circumstances that impact others.

The OP has indicated 2 major areas of concern. #1: runoff from a steep hill. #2: Unknown, uninvited people have been on his property marking his trees as well. Those are both cause for concern and he sought advice here. I commend him for keeping his head through 20 pages of typical rants (mine included).

His concern for the runoff was legit but his initial posting was because he would be losing his scenic view and trails he uses but doesn't own. If he posted just about the concern about runoff then I am positive he would have had a lot more positive replies from the TBN community but trying to dictate what others do on their own property is a very touchy topic on TBN since almost everyone on here is a land owner.

Big Ballers concerns regarding runoff damage to his property is a great concern here in NW WA State where we live. We have many examples of in-condsiderate, illegal, and even blatlant disregard for neighbor property. Unfortunately some of the big timber owners and processors, many times the same company as they buy other timber to augment their own holdings to keep their crews working. Subdividers/developers of smaller parcels are bad. Seems the county land use reviewers of permit apps gloss over the engineering and miss areas thatr require remediation. This is seperate from the enviornmental ranters and ravers that for the most part are ignorant of what they parrot from their movement leaders. Generally you have to sue in court to to get redress wheer you are at a disadvantage with your affordable lawer and their staff attorneys on retainers or salary. Many a house has slid down a hill or been flooded out due to such negligence on both the developer and the county approving officials. It is a waste of time to sue the county in these matters as they have no liablilty for what bthey do. They good thing is ,most clear cuts on large acreage tends to be self healing very fast. Plenty of water up here and the brush and small alders come in fast and lush to hold the soil from erosion the first spring/summer.

Luckily on my up coming clear cut all the gulleys drain onto my land which is up against a county HY.

Big Baller, look over the terrain and determine where the natural drain patterns are, then keep an eye on the final clean-up. Unless the state inspector that approved their permit was lazy their permit should address the slowing of runoff. I had to do some things to prevent run-off and silting into the year round creek, and drainage that reaches the ditch along the county rightaway. that is how thourough they tend to be. A good courteous conversation with the logging super and they should give you a copy of their permit. It is public domain so you can request a copy from the state DNR serving office if not.

So, that is some more info to help put you at ease. It will probably turn out well; but, pays to be vigilant. This is a good time to learn how to read a countour map if you do not already; it is not that hard. Your county dept of land use has these maps for your use. Here in Kitsap you can view and/download from their web site as well as get info on all your neighboring property including what their taxes are and where they live.

Like I said many posts ago. If you want neighbors to behave a certain way, then get out your check book, its that simple. That's why lawyers are in business, because all people do not behave like others want them to.

Big Baller,

I would suggest you first contact the companies local Forrester to inquire, not complain as he may be turned off at that. Your state suggests this action.

Ask if he would mind letting you see the Tree or Forestry Management Plan. Also, he will be marking the area to be cut, marking areas at watersheds not to cut, neighbors boundary verification, etc.

He may let you know when he is doing so along your boundary and you could walk it together.

I once talked extensively with a Warehasser NC Forester who was great. I also worked with him to identify forest land to buy (for me, although I lost out every time to a local logger!). Very good group of guys who love the land (as a norm).
