A blue slash indicates ``coal'' trees, those under 12 inches in diameter and destined to become someone's firewood. Wider, older trees marked with a single blue dot are ``saw log'' trees more likely to become someone's kitchen table. Trees marked with two blue dots denote the boundary of area to be logged. Of course, blue dots can be for trail marking, bug spraying, and who knows what else.

I will add that it helps to pay attention when the cutting starts. The owners of your logging area seem to be on the ball but when adjoining land was cut around me in Maine, I was warned the guys were well-known trouble makers. I stopped as they were getting ready to cut and shook hands and said I was the adjoining landowner and we talked about the tree lines which were well-marked and clearly blazed. We agreed and that was the end of it. I had secretly taken a video the day before.

On the way out, the guy in the harvestor mentioned how cold and miserable it was (way below zero) and he was freezing in the cab. Now, not everyone can do this because it sends the wrong message, but I said I understood since I had worked outside too, I thought for a minute and said, "you know what, I'm gonna send the kid back with a thermos of hot coffee and some donuts". But, I added, "lose my thermos and I'll have to kick your a-z-z." We both laughed since he was double my size.

We hit it off and I genuinely liked the guy. He was just an employee but I made sure he was taken care of for the time they were there. He pointed out some partridge for me and I told him the best place to wait for a deer. I'll add that I secretly walked the line daily. Guess what, I never had a line tree problem and slash was away from the line. I got a new thermos as a gift and that's the way it ended.

No probs since we each saw the other's point of view. To agree in life or logging, look at the other man's point of view.

They are cutting next door here as well. Just make sure your boundary line is well marked. Get out there frequently when they are cutting. Talk to the loggers. They may offer to cut your land as well!'
Loggers don't want trouble, but it is easy to stray over a boundary line. If you need to, white (non electrified) electric fence tape on white fiberglass 5' posts, one strand, is an easy way to mark your boundary. Very visible and is an easy guideline for them to use. Not much you can do if you don't own the land. Too bad. Easy to assume undisturbed land will always be undisturbed.
Good luck.

Bigballer,
If you took ofense at my posts I apologize. My aproach is not always gentle as I am getting old and crotchity and have seen my share of both sides of this issue; that is why I tried to explain my posistion from an economic standpoint.
Ron

no offense taken, thank you for sharing your experience in the logging industry. this has become a very educational thread and hope that others feel this as well.

Hey folks, I am pretty sure we are being duped by Bigballer. Surely he only facetiously presented the ridiculous premise that a small landowner should be able to dictate to another land owner what to do on his own property in order to get an animated response from a forum comprised of serious landowners. GOOD ONE. I know I get animated myself whenever people who did not aquire, do not pay taxes on, and otherwise have no legitimate interest in a piece of land think they have some say in its use. We have all seen it many times.
In fact this also reminds me of people who live on a quarter acre lot that buy 4 wheelers. They frequently buy them with no other possibility of using them than trespassing. It happens on my property all the time. I have just gotten so numb to it that I have given up dealing with the morons In fact there is no end to the ways people will find to use/abuse others property in some kind of dim witted, narrow minded thought process.
Thanks Bigballer.

Really, Im not quite buying that one. Based on his continued involvement and willingness to take advice and gather information I seriously doubt it was his intent. He is a small land owner probably genuinly confused and upset about the future of his home. Maybe alittle wet behind the ears but thats why you ask questions. Im surprised at the harsh responses generated early in this thread. I actually ask myself more at the moment if your post was a joke or effort to stir the pot. I dont get it?

I'd have to agree with you.

I believe the "harsh" responses are being generated by people who worked hard to purchase, pay taxes on, and upkeep their land and are tired of people who have done none of that thinking they have rights to it.
Because of his reasonable responses I think bagballer sounds smarter than to have seriously posed this question in the first place.

Dont ever forget, emotion can almost always negate intelligence at some point.
