Logging Hitch

I have various lengths of chain with a clevis hook on one end and a round hook on the other. They are stored in the ammo box mounted on the fender. I also have a proper logging wire choker too. I also plan to use a small grapple/grubber as well: http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/projects/137965-clearing-alders-4.html

This is still a work in progress. And once I get into the woods next week I will report back on it's success.

I am hoping to finish the loader mount early next week.

Spent the last two days chipping and logging for a friend. He's in the pictures - I am not.
I drove the tractor there - half hour drive. Did it early in the morning to avoid traffic.

Image 2 is the third pile. Forgot to take before and after of the first 2 piles. Image 3 is the after. Image 5 is on to the next piles. Image 6 is a closer look.

Image 8 is using the log hauler for the first time - welds held!!! Image 10 - another view.

We used the chain more so than the wire choker. The length of the choker didn't allow it to be hooked on the upper clevis hooks. Some times I used a short length of chain to get it connected. We found in the end chain worked better and allowed us to lift the logs. The ground was fairly level - so even dragging on the ground worked. We ran two 7 hour days at 2300 rpm and used 20 litres of fuel - not bad.

Looks like the hitch worked out good and nice pile of wood chips.

I plan to start on mine maybe this weekend....I've been hauling dirt and getting ready for garden season.

I found a good tree that fell over the weekend...A beech, but it will be hard to get out and hard to cut on the hill...I may have to pull it downhill if i can.

I would like to use it for making furniture...but...it is a ugly tree.

I have about 22 BIG wild cherry trees on my property and i just about have to guard them...every logger around here calls and wants to buy them.

Hey Lloyd, great pics and a great job done on the hitch. Glad to see you don't have as much snow as we do here. Still 3ft of snow in the woods. I notice you have lic plates on your tractor, is that a requirement to drive a tractor on the road in NS?

With the chain the hitch will lift the logs off the ground as much as your 3pt will travel vertically - different for each tractor I would assume - less the slack in the chain. About 12 to 18 inches I guess. We tried to align the butts of the logs, than I would back up with the hitch and lower to rest on the ground and hook up. Some times I lifted the logs and set them down again to gain more scope on the chain.

I think you can get away with a SMV sign on the tractor. I had the plate on my old cockshutt and transfered it and the registration over to the new unit. They gov't no longer provides non-expiry plates. If you register you have to pay every year like a car. I figure with insurance and liability these days I would play it safe and register and get insurance for road travel. I feel more comfortable traveling on the roads. The return trip from the logging site took half hour - about 14-17kmh.

That would be a good ideal on an arm that would extend out.

I made this hitch extension for when i haul a slide-in-camper and pull a boat...i wonder if this would work, it wouldn't have the extra receiver on the end and i could make one a little longer.

That's my next project(work in progress) for my bucket. I did cut the angle iron, laid out and welded the three 2" receiver ports and two clevis hooks. I just need to grid, prime and paint and attach to top edge of bucket. Should be ready next week.

Now the only thing left to do is build a 2" receiver base for the vise and a few 2" receiver hooks and things...

Do you mean have an adaptor so you can plug a vice into a receiver tube? Have the vise attached to a plate, attached to an insert tube.

If so that's what I want to do also, was just thinking about for my service body truck, my last truck had one on the bumper but didn't get used that much so I thought with the new truck just have it removable via receiver insert.

You have me thinking it could come in handy on the tractor as well, I have a receiver on the top of the bucket as well as a 3pt unit.

Exactly. I got a record vise at a yard sale. I will mount to a base with insert tube. Now re: the truck I think I will make an adapter to fit my truck as well.

Darn TBN - too many ideas - not enough time!!! Keep them coming though!

Lloyd you could mount a pipe vise and then use the PTO to thread and cut pipe.
