Yeah, (IMHO) one only gets a few tries to connect the PTO before strength diminishes and frustration levels rise. If I don't get it in a couple tries, and find I need 3 or 4 arms to hold PTO shaft, while extending shaft forward, while pulling collar backwards, or holding in pin, while keeping the universal aligned, while also rotating the shaft (!); out comes a bungee cord to hang the PTO shaft from the top link. That way one can focus on the connection without having to hold the full weight.
Do all Kubota's have a PTO brake? Sometimes it's easier to turn tractor's PTO shaft than to turn the implement PTO shaft. Turning a winch shouldn't be too bad depending on how "tight" the winch's clutch is set.

Edit: Ha! Looks like Eric said same thing as I was typing. Don't just tie up hair around PTO, but, especially in winter, watch that jacket hoodie tie-strings, scarves, etc.. don't drape down. With Wallenstein winches, to release the brake you're "suppose" to pull in the cable which releases tension on the "lock dog" and gravity allows it fall away from the cogs on the drum, but it's very tempting to just reach in there and pull the lock lever away from the cogs. Not recommended if PTO is on as you're close to the spinning PTO. If you have hoodie-strings, this could go very bad.

Ill try to sneak up a question on this thread. I have a tajfun EGV35 on my Kubota B26 and the issue I have is when I pull out the cable to reach the various logs I want to winch I usually end up with more cable than needed and if I just star my pull with the extra loose cable out, I end up with a snag on the drum. The only solution I have right now is I have a helper loop a rope around the main winch line and pull on it perpendicular midway between the tractor and the log. This put tension on the cable until the cable start to tighten around the log. I know its not a pretty solution but so far it works. I am quite sure there must be a better way to pickup the slack until the log start to tighten the line.

Do you have a drum brake witch should stop the drum when the wire slacks? If not the drum spins out a lot of loose cable when you pull it out.

I have a drum brake, but in order to release the cable I need to put in in "neutral" so its free spinning. When I reach the log the operator put the brake back on but there is always extra cable that got rolled out and I need to take the slack out before winching. I could roll the tractor forward to eliminate it but once the back blade dug itself a nice rest spot id rather leave it there.

When I need to pull in some slack - either because I pulled out too much, or because my self-releasing snatch block just released and I have a bit of slack until the cable pulls taught again, I just step on the cable as I am pulling it in, using the friction under my boot to put some tension on it. I step off and get back clear as it snugs up.

Thank you for the excellent info, Oldpath. I never knew there was such thing as a skidding cone. Definitely going to look into that.

I used this one and it worked well. It's not inexpensive but it is fairly indestructable.

It's not the main brake I'm talking about, it's a small brake that stops the drum when pulling out the wire.

This is the mechanism, the drum if it's totally free running makes the winch almost unusable.
