I was just reading through some of the previous posts and realized I kinda left the electrical project up in the air. The power company won't hook us up until there is something to run it to. That's one of the reasons the barn got moved up on the time schedule.

Nothing wrong with getting a bit giddy over a new build.

If I had it to do over again, I probably would have run underground from the last pole to my garage. I did go underground from the garage to the house, my garage came first too. But, after everything seemed to be in place and connected by the utility, we waited two weeks for someone to come and flip the disconnect on at the transformer. they can be frustrating. Meanwhile, I was dumping 5-7 gal. of gas into the generator everyday.

A quick question:

Has anyone used Tyvek between the purlins and metal siding (walls only)? And if so why?

Thanks for any input on this.

As I recall, purlins are on the roof structure and girts are on the wall structure; though they serve essentially the same purpose. Anyway, I doubt the Tyvek would be of any value as there is no OSB, plywood, or other sheathing to support it before the wall steel sheets go up.

I was in a barn/shop today that used nice roll up doors to get maximum clearance and to keep the open door from blocking the sunlight from the dormer windows in the roof.

The roll up door was boxed in and a 12 foot roll up didn't take all that much room rolled up...

I thought about roll up doors, just don't like the look of them. That and I want insulated doors so if I heat the place in the far off future I don't need to change the doors.

Thanks, always nice to hear I'm not the only one enjoying this journey, even as drawn out as it is!

I like roll-up doors for their space saving aspects as you've mentioned; but unfortunately they look too commercial/industrial for most residential applications. If the drum was boxed in for appearance, I sure hope the owner made it removable for maintenance and repairs.

We had our mortgage closing yesterday! The funds are now "available" and the Perma-Column posts have been order. There is a total of 29 posts in the building, 16 are 17' and 13 are 27'. The first five feet are 10,000 psi concrete with vertical rebar then laminated and finger jointed columns above that. These were a significant upgrade in cost, however they keep the wood portion of the posts 18" above grade (NO ROT!:)) Those should be here by next weekend. I am planning on drilling the 24" holes for the footers on next Thursday with inspection on Friday morning and pour the concrete Friday afternoon. If we don't get too much rain, that is. I would like to have the posts set by Monday, but that may be a bit ambitious as this is a one man operation.

I decided to stick with the 10' tall doors. After much research and back and forth I measured the height of the sliding door on the existing garage, it is 9'6". The 10' doors will be plenty for any of my needs, now and in the future.

I keep thinking this is going to be a big building, but then I remember how much room the farming equipment takes up already (been putting it inside the corner stakes to get a feeling of size) I will definitely need to play around with organizing the equipment in the bays. Of course that's all part of the fun.

Hope to get you guys some pictures this weekend of leveling the pad.

Roll ups are limiting in style...

Here's a couple of pictures of the shop...

The idea was to maximize height and not block the light from the dormers when the doors are open.
