Cavenders private label brand of dress shirts are a good deal.

Baskins and Cavenders also both sell Wrangler shirts in neck and sleeve lengths which is a better way to buy in my opinion than small - medium -large - xl or xxl sizing.

I have a question and it is just a question not wanting to offend anyone.
When it is 90+ degrees why do the bull riders still travel about wearing long sleeved shirts? I see them in the walmart when they are in town. I just want to know and am not making any kind of judgement.

With all due respect in part you've partially answered your own question:Unless they are or have made it "big"($),they travel with fellow bullriders and usually "light"(cost efficiant) in the wardrobe department espeicially with todays fuel prices.Therefore since they are on the road "they" tend to wear,bring etc their best shirts.Whether they are competeting or escorting a buckle bunny that evening and in the morning back on the road(unless event is 2/3 days) and of course on Sundays whenever possible "cowboy church".
Some folks work 8hrs a day,others prefer to hang on for 8 seconds.

Ed, Big Tiller hit the nail on the head so to say. Buy shirts that fit you in your largest measurement in the color/price you like. Most young guys have problems with shoulders or arm length. Most older guys have the belly is bigger than the shoulders. Then spend the $5-$15 to have a tailor fit them to you, depending on the part of the country your in and how and where they have to take it in. If you get a few of the same at the same time it may be cheaper, the tailor use one as a template for the others. You will look better if your shirts fit you, not you trying to fit your shirts.

Thanks for all the idea, I will look at the brands you guys mentioned. A question for those of you suggesting taking shirts to a tailor. Can they do anything about the sleeves being too short?? Any shirt I have found so far that the sleeves come down far enough it is because the shoulders are an inch or two down my arm so I am guessing that wouldn't work. It sounds like you are saying find a shirt that fits in the shoulders and has sleeves that fit and a tailor can fix the body pretty easily??

It would be easier if we were in the midwest where all the western stores are so I could try on lots of different shirts. Do you guys have any tips for how to pick the right size without being able to try them on?

Also, I have seen a few shirts where the size was two numbers. What are the numbers and is it something you can measure so I would know what size to get?

A tradition from square dancing is to wear long sleeved shirts so the gentler sex does not have to touch your skin while dancing. Some of them also carry on the tradition of the older cowboys and used long sleves and cowboy hats to sheild them from sunburn as well as the bandana around their neck. The rednecks really came about from the oil rig workers where all that "extra" clothing could/would get caught in equipment and possed a safety risk. Long sleeved shirts also helped prevent scratches from riding through the brush or falling into the dirt.

Ever watch those old western movies... must have never got above 70 degrees back then. You can always roll up your sleeves....

It all depends on what you are used to. In my younger days I had to wear suits to work and did not notice the temps even when over 85. I noticed over 95 regardless of how little I could wear.

I had some great-uncles that worked outside on the farm until they died in their 80's-90's. They always wore navy blue, long sleeve Dickie workshirts with all the buttons fastened all the way to their necks, straw or felt hats (straw in summer, felt in winter), navy blue Dickie work pants and work boots.

I never saw them unbutton a collar button or roll up a sleeve my entire life. I have found that the long sleeve shirt helps a lot in full sun and keeps you cooler than a short sleeve shirt does. If you can lounge in the shade, then the short sleeve is better but I was never allowed to lounge. :laughing:

Sorry, they can't make the sleeves long (they don't add fabric when they talior they take it away, more on that later). It seems to be that your lean and tall. Some might call you "Slim", try to look for long or tall when looking for shirts.

Ok, so a question for you. When you say the sleeves fit if the shoulder seam comes a few inches down your arm, are you saying your cuff is at your wrist? If so, then your sleeves are still not long enough. You need the seem to be at your joint (when you bend your elbow and flap your arm {like a chicken}, feel the joint) for the sleeve to be long enough. The tailor can take in the part from your neck to your shoulder if that is to long. They can take in the body really easy and they can make the sleeves narrower (unless you have guns, haha).

Two numbers, the first is your neck size. The second is the center of your back to shoulder and down your arm to a bent elbow ending at your wrist bone.
