Look, It\'s a Bird...

It's a plane... it's two planes. A couple of A10s flew by yesterday while I was laying brick. Grabbed the camera just in time /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Rob, I didn't realize southern Michigan was in a war zone. Those Warthogs are ugly planes, but very effective on tanks! (you don't have a tank hid in the woods behind the house do you?)

Why didn't they come by my place I feel left out /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Those are some cool planes

Re: Look, It\'s a Bird...

Very cool shot. I love A-10s. They are very cool looking planes. Their styling is distinctive yet, practical. Usually the only planes that fly-by here are F-16s at high altitude. A few times some months ago I was able to watch them at night "dogfighting". They were dropping flares. That's a site to see. One time I was driving home and kept watching them. I know I shouldn't have paid that much attention to them, but well... /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

We don't get many flyovers where we are. There was a festival in Goshen (IN) which is where they may have been coming from. I thought it was fitting for the fourth of July weekend /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Those are the snow drifts in Rob's driveway during our brutal Indiana/Michigan winters... good thing he has a tractor! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Re: Look, It\'s a Bird...

What is really cool is to watch them do their thing. They fly from Whiteman AFB to the practice range here at Ft Leonard Wood. When they shoot, if you don't know what you are hearing, it sounds like a giant burping in the distance. And if you happen to be near the airfield when they are practicing touch and go, you're whole car will shake when they stand them on their tail and hit the afterburner.

But the coolest thing I ever saw in the air was last year. Clear skies, middle of the day and my wife told me she was seeing something very strange flying over very high. When I first looked, it looked like the Starship Enterprise with a smaller ship following close by. When I looked with my binoculars I saw that it was a B2 Stealth being refueled with another B2 following and waiting for his turn.

I was born pretty close to you, but haven't lived there in a long, long time. I still remember picnics at Meramac Caverns, all the great fireworks you can buy in Missouri, and the sonic booms from F-4 Phantoms flying from the McDonnell-Douglas factory near St. Louis to wherever they were going. Used to have soldiers from FLW in our house all the time.

You ARE lucky! That would have been awesome to see. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Re: Look, It\'s a Bird...

Good shot Rob.
So that's what those were. They passed around our house too.
My wife got my attention as they were heading west, quite low. Then they made a VERY WIDE turn to the south, east, north and West again, and disappeared. I tried to get a picture, but they were low enough where the house kept getting in the way. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
As we saw a WWII bomber a bit earlier, we thought there might have been an air show at Willow Run.

I am transplant here. Was born and raised in Kansas City but retired from the Army and stayed here. Now I work for the DOD and get to see things like that frequently.

I love A-10's, my favorite modern war plane.

Re: Look, It\'s a Bird...

My all time favorite. I have had a desire to build one to 1/4 scale for r/c purposes.

Proof that with ample power, anything can fly.

On a side-note, I am outside the USMC base at Quantico, VA. The marine a-v-ate-hers just love flying thier F-18's fast and low. Say ouch when they are in town.

Re: Look, It\'s a Bird...

I had a little more time to grab the camera when this bird flew over the farm.

Re: Look, It\'s a Bird...

They were in town for the Michigan International Speedway race, and the final home game between the Spurs and Pistons. They dock at Ann Arbor Airport when they are in the area.

Re: Look, It\'s a Bird...

Before the US began it's part of the Gulf War, I had one fly over my place repeatedly at a 20 minute interval for a couple of hours on the same path. The pilot was just high enough to clear the trees and so close I could see oil dripping or misting out of the engine.
