I pulled the old tractor to the house yesterday. After further inspection I'm not sure it was even driven to where I found it. The radiator is about half full of coal black thick oily gunk. I can put it in gear and still push it by hand, the same as I can in neutral. I'm thinking this will probably be a parts tractor.

It sounds to me like a cracked block or head with the radiator full of oil. Since the block can be sleeved, I think you might be surprised at how these tractors can be restored if you want. The only problem is you can quickly spend $3,000 and end up with a great looking $2,500 tractor. A parts tractor might be the best idea. You might make a bunch off of it that way. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

People just drop off unwanted dogs and empty beer cans around here. If I could only convince the better half that I found "all those implements that keep showing up" along the road!

You should have the sheriff run the v.i.n. or serial numbers (if it has one) through NCIC. That way, even if were stolen from outside his jurisdiction, even another state (your sheriff probably just checked the local reports), it would show up. Anytime a vehicle or piece of property is reported stolen to a proper law enforcement agency, the identifying number should be entered in NCIC.
It's sort of the national database we use in law enforcement.
Most, if not all, states share their records with it.
If it's clear through that, then you're probably home free.
At least this way you don't end up putting money into it, then finding out it was stolen from somewhere.
It's probably not, but better safe than sorry.

anthonyk, is right. Your local law enforcement should run it through NCIC (National Crime Information Center) if it has any numbers to run? Hope nothin turns up and it's yours /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
