Dumb question? Do you really think you need a 85 hp. tractor to mow and plow snow with? Must be one **** of a pasture>

What's wrong with wanting an 85hp tractor to mow with?

I mow with a ~95 hp tractor.... Only got 13 ac.. but i like to get it finished in 2hrs or less... hard to do that with a small tractor and small mower...

I personally think it is a bit of an over-kill. I would equate this to hunting rabbits with a Sherman tank.

We sometimes have a 140 HP tractor on a 10' mower.

Overkill = probably. But it gives a real smooth ride for the driver, you can go really fast (12MPH +) and it is the only tractor availible sometimes.

I don't see anything wrong with wanting a big tractor.

You normally get more tractor for your money when you go bigger secondhand too.

Over kill would be putting an 85 horse tractor on a 6 foot finish mower and mowing your lot in town. Of course I know an old farmer who does this for his yard which is not much bigger :)

Or buying a 7710 for a 2.3 acre lot as a back up when you already have a JD2555 as the primary mower... unless you count the Steiner???
Some of us just like more hp rather than more time!

David, weren't you planning on starting a business with your 7710?

Personally, if you can write the check then buy what you want. Who cares if someone thinks it is over kill. They don't know what the owners intentions or future plans are. In this case, no one knows the OP's property size or location. He could be mowing 100 acres of pasture or 5 acres. And I don't consider 85 horsepower tractors to be big:rolleyes:

I need approximately 85 hp tractor for plowing snow and mowing pastures. Of course must have loader, 4wd, and a cab.

Not sure why you need a 4WD? Have you ever driven a 2WD 85HP tractor? Unless you are driving through some thick mud, you would have a hard time getting one stuck.

I can't see how mowing and snow plowing would require 4WD.

I've seen them get stuck. And they are difficult to rescues when they do get stuck.

Four wheel drive is usefull if you are mowing on a steep slope. It gives you better traction and steering going across, and helps with scuffing if you are going up and down the hill. But it does reduce the turning radius.

For plowing snow, it probably wont really do much, except to help steer alot.

Dadgummit guys, we're supposed to be HELPING the man spend his money, not talking him out of what he wants! Even though he's a new member, I have a feeling he's done his homework, is familiar with tractors and just wanted a little "push".

TOO MUCH HP...That's a first I've ever read on TBN...haha

DON'T NEED 4WD...It's invaluable if the situation warrants!

Wow, I must be on my wife's forum...always trying to talk me out of stuff I "NEED".

If the man wants 4wd, to spend 30k and a tractor with 85 raging horses...let's help him find it and back him up all the way!

Where's Roy Jackson when I need him for some backup?

He probably wants 4wd because he can afford it and he also wants a loader. It is tough to find a used 2wd loader tractor in good condition because momentum must be used to fill the bucket in hard packed conditions and this puts a lot of stress on the machine. 4wd's do not suffer from this affliction and can load the bucket in most any conditions thru the smooth application of force. Unless you are really cash-strapped, a 2wd loader tractor dont make much sence these days, especially a used one.

I really purchased my 7710 to replace the JD2555 because I kept getting the JD stuck. It really is too big for what I want, due to trailering problems, but since most of my tractor seat time is done right here, it isn't a big deal. I do have a couple of small jobs that I trade tractor work for other types of work, so I have kept the JD to fill those until I get the "right" tractor that will do both types of work. Having the boom mower has added another demension to my being able to mow low lying areas near swamps and such.
You should have seen me when I went to mow a perculation pond with the Ford. I drove across the end of it and it went to the axles in the length of the tractor. I could just see a wrecker bill coming!! I put it in reverse, stepped on the differential lock and it started spinning all 6 wheels. Slowly it started moving, like it had found something solid and low and behold, out it came. The JD would still be sitting there with it's 2wd. I reached out with the boom mower for the rest of that pond to avoid that happening again.
If it weren't for the distance and him wanting a cabbed tractor, I would be tempted to offer my tractor to him so I could buy a 4wd tractor like the JD, maybe with a detachable loader. The prices for 45-60 hp 4wd loader tractors aren't cheap, as that is what everyone wants.
