Looking for a First Tractor

Our family has a farm that has not been used for about 20 years. We are in the process of selecting a tractor The farm is just under 100 acres and has frontage on one road. We have discovered that there are a number of ATV trails that have been made by knocking down rock walls. Some people have used that land as a dump.

Our first task is to fill the holes in the walls with large rocks (500lbs plus) in order to deter the trespassers. There are many wild roses that need to be removed and several fields that need to be cleared.

We would appreciate any advise on what size tractor you recommend. We believe we will need at least a loader, backhoe and a brush hog.

Welcome Gary! Do you have future plans for the farm land? A 100 acres is a lot to mow if that is your goal. There is a general rule that says you need 5 PTO hp per foot of mower. With that in mind I would be looking at the largest size mower I could afford and a tractor with the appropriate horsepower. Tractors in that size range will have plenty of loader capacity for what you describe.

Welcome to TBN, pretty much what Mark said.

It would help to know the topography, type of overgrowth that needs to be cleared etc.

I personally would be looking at a 50 HP and up probably in conjunction with renting special needs equipment or paying someone for selected tasks. It is probably going to take a bigger tractor to get it in shape than keep it that way.

I can do a lot of stuff with my L5030, but often need the MF375 or M8540.
