Looking for a good Self-Propelled Lawn Mower

I've had one of these Toro Personal Pace mower(from HD) and I believe that this is the best push mower design I've seen. As you push the mower the handle slides and engages the mower self propel drive. So the faster you walk the more pressure you put on the handle and the more the self propelled engages.

So, if you want a leisurely walk or a quick run the mower keeps up automatically. HD has it for about $329 without electric start.

I’m the one who John referred to in finding a Honda mower for $199. It’s a Husqvarna 21” push mower with a Honda 5.5hp GC series engine. The Husqvarna dealer was advertising them back in March. So far, I’m quite pleased. The engine is quiet and strong. I wanted a push model, which was $199, but I seem to remember he had a couple of powered models starting around $260-280.

Kent; The only thing I did not like about the JD was the OPC, if you let go of the handle the engine quits. The plastic wheels, etc. I don't like, but they seem to be par for the course. It is a nice mower to use, and I would choose it if I was limited to that price range. Now if I find one for what JMIII paid, /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif, I would bring it home in a minute.

Thanks for the replies,

I bought a Lawn Boy Gold Series. Its has a 2 stroke engine for the hills, and works great for what I needed it for. The dealer is a person that I dealt with for years. He will make sure that I satisified. I also like the offset wheel for trimming, and hills. I think that I found what I wanted. Thanks for all the input.

Without a doubt the absolute best 21" walk-behind self-propelled mower is a Toro Commercial model #22040. This is not the Toro's you see at Home Depot or Lowe's. It is Toro's commercial line and is premier in design. Those Toro's at the "department stores" are crap just like the Craftsman you had. It has a 3-speed gearbox, aluminum or magnesium deck, steel wheels with real bearings. Comes with a 2-stroke Suzuki motor and will practically never wear out with proper care. Steelfan, I know these mowers inside out. I have torn many of them down completely. The Suzuki engines are made brilliantly. the gearboxes have an aluminum housing but the shaft and all 3 gears are STEEL. The pinions and ring gears out at each wheel are STEEL. There is no better 21" walk-behind. It's all the commercial people use in Texas. They list somewhere over $1000 but can be bought around $900. If you want one that will last - this is the only way to go. They also make the same mower with a 4-stroke Kawasaki motor that is just as good I just prefer the 2-stroke.

Thanks for the reply on the Toro BIG. I'm grateful for the info. The Mower that I bought is http://www.lawnboy.com/productinfo/mowers/goldpro/10550.html. I bought it for $480. It too early to tell if it will last, but I love the Easy Stride system. The handle moves when you push on it, and the harder you push the faster it goes. The bagger kit will cost me $65, but I'm waiting to add that later. Thanks again for all the replies.
