Woodyacres,

Thats my prob, got a slight slope with a one lane bridge at the bottom to go across. If it stays good and cold its not an issue its those warm snaps when it rains that casue it to get sporty.

I think I am going to get me a large metal garbage can and start putting the ash from the wood stove in it, that way I have a supply on hand when its needed.

Like this? I actually used a Yardtool (21 spikes) to break up some ice I had, just wanted to rough it up.

Ok folks I want to run something past you before I make a purchase. The situation is this; leave that thin layer of snow on the driveway so the rear blade doesnt take the gravel off and sure enough we get a warm snap with some rain and then cold again. Now I have a bob sled run instead of a driveway, this happens at least 2 twice a year and sometimes more. I was thinking that a box blade with the rippers set at the lowest might work to rip that inch or two of ice up and allow it to be removed. Has anyone tried this before? Wouldnt mind having the box blade and if this is another viable use then it may be an easier purchase.

Hi ttstraw,

Know just where you're coming from. In Clements, Md. where I live, we got 20 inches of snow. I angled my blade backwards to not take up the milling on our driveway and lane, but some snow went under the blade and ended up after a day or two as ice. I spun the blade around scoop forward and bladed carefully for 2 days and got up most of the ice.

With a 2920 and a blade, we don't have much ground pressure. There is no down force other then the weight of the blade. I would suggest you do what I did, which is to just blade carefully. I found that on each pass I would get up about 1/4th inch of ice, so it took allot of passes. Once I got bare patches I would try to lift the blade over them and set it down on the far side. If it looks like you're pulling up to much stone, you can always give it up.

Come spring, think about replacing you're gravel with what we call around here 'milling', which is recycled asphalt. It's probably not much more expensive then gravel and once it sets up it is harder for the blade to pull up in the winter. I think we pay about $400 a 22 ton dump truck load for it around here.

Hope that helps,

Larry

Get an old flail mower and fix it so it (flails) skims the ice surface.:D

I use salt. Water softener salt works great. A little goes a long way. You can get it in finer grained form that is spreadable in a spreader.
